Description

Brown Derby, 1975. These three black and white film negative strips were created for the Lacey Leader newspaper. These images show a woman posing for portrait-style photos and two women working in a diner. This diner is Davis's Brown Derby. Image 15 shows a woman in a button-up, short-sleeved shirt posing for a photo. She is not smiling. Image 16 is very similar to the previous image, but here the woman is smiling. Image 17 is nearly identical to image 16. Image 18 shows two women standing in a commercial kitchen. The woman on the left is wearing glasses and holding a loaf of bread. The woman on the right does not have glasses and is smiling. There are several other loaves of bread sitting on the open door of an oven immediately in front of the woman on the left. Image 19 is nearly identical to image 18. Image 20 is very similar to the previous two images, but the woman on the right is facing more directly toward the camera. Image 21 shows the two women standing in front of an open oven. There are two loaves of bread sitting on the open door of an oven. The woman without glasses is nearer to the camera. Images 22 and 23 are nearly identical to image 21. Image 24 shows the two women cooking on a stovetop. The woman without glasses is shown from head to toe. The image is oriented vertically. Image 25 is nearly identical to image 24. Image 26 is very similar to the last two images, but the image is oriented horizontally. Image 27 is nearly identical to images 24 and 25. Image 28 shows the two women standing behind the diner counter. Approximately six restaurant patrons are seated at the counter. Image 29 is nearly identical to image 28. "The Davis’ Brown Derby restaurant opened on Capitol Way in 1935, by George and Martha Davis. The Davises moved here from Centralia, where they had operated another small restaurant. Architect Joseph Wohleb built out this structure in front of a bungalow in which the Davises resided. It is still in existence, visible through a small entryway between two sides of the building. The Davises and Wohleb no doubt took inspiration from the famous Brown Derby restaurant chain in Los Angeles, which launched the careers of several starlets and was featured in several movies and television shows. Like its more famous namesake, it is decorated with derbies above its mid-Century marquis."
