Description

Local Businesses, 1977. These seven black and white film negative strips were created for the Lacey Leader newspaper. These images were created using three different film rolls, so some of the physical numbers on the strips are repeated. For the purposes of this description, each of these strips will be grouped according to which film roll they originally came from. Each group will be assigned a lower-case letter to go along with the physical numbers on the strips (ex: 1a, 2a, 3a, 1b, 2b, 3b, etc.) to help differentiate between images. The images in group "a" show two men in chef's uniforms (one with glasses, one without glasses) making hamburgers on a flat top grill in a restaurant. Image 37a shows the chef without glasses holding up a small, closed-topped pitcher in his right hand and a metal spatula in his left hand. He is lookiing toward the chef with glasses and smirking. The chef with glasses is holding a metal spatula in his right hand. Image 38a is very similar to the previous image, but the chef without glasses is looking down at the closed-topped pitcher in his hand. Image 39a is similar to the previous two images, but here the chef without glasses is making a pouring motion with the closed-topped pitcher. The chef in glasses is looking toward the camera. Image 40a shows the chef without glasses turning toward the flat top grill to his left. Image 41a shows the chef without glasses pouring something from the pitcher onto the flat top grill. Image 43a shows the chef without glasses looking toward the chef with glasses and speaking. The chef without glasses is not holding anyting in his hands. Image 44a shows both chefs looking toward the grill. The chef without glasses is reaching his right arm toward the grill, but his hand is obscured behind the other chef. Image 1a shows the chef without glasses holding a spatula in his right hand and pointing toward the grill with his left index finger. Image 2a shows the chef with glasses reaching down with a spatula to flip a hamburger on the grill. Image 3a is similar to the previous images, but the photographer has moved to their right, making some of the restaurant's windows visible in the image's left-hand side. The chef without glasses is looking toward the other chef and smiling or laughing. Image 4a is similar to the previous image, but both men are looking down toward the grill top and smiling. Image 5a is very similar to the previous image, but the chef without glasses is reaching toward the grill top with the spatula in his right hand. A third person in a chef's uniform is visible in the background. Image 6a shows the chef without glasses flipping a hamburger in the air with his spatula. Image 7a is very similar to the previous image, but the flipping hamburger is higher up in the air. Image 8a is very similar to the previous two images, but the third person in a chef's uniform is pointing up and to the right of the camera. The images in group "b" show people working in, and scenes in, a grocery store. Image 3b shows a man in glasses wearing an apron and a tie with foxes or weasels on it working a checkstand at a grocery store. He is holding a plastic produce bag which appears to have broccoli in it. Image 4b shows the man looking toward the person whose groceries he is checking out (this person is outside of the image frame) and speaking to them. Image 5b shows the man about to place a Family Circle magazine into a paper grocery bag, A tag on the man's apron reads "The Family Grocer" and "Tom." Image 6b shows the man removing his hand from the grocery bag after putting something into it. Image 7b is very similar to image 6b, but the photographer has lowered their perspective slightly. Image 8b shows a long, open-topped grocery cooler filled with many wrapped packages of meat stocked in it. Image 9b shows a long, open-topped cooler filled with various produce items. Image 10b is similar to the previous image, but the photographer has zoomed out slightly. Several fern fronds are visible hanging down into the top edge of the image. Image 11b shows a man in an apron, a short-sleeved button-up shirt and a tie with his body oriented toward the right-hand side of the image frame. He is turning his head to his right to look toward the camera. Image 12b shows the man with his body and head facing toward the camera. He has many pens and a small box in his shirt's breast pocket. The images in group "c" show exterior shots of various businesses. Image 44c shows an exterior shot of a Safeway grocery store. A large portion of the store's parking lot is visible in the image, and the parked car nearest to the camera is a Chevrolet pickup truck near the left-hand edge of the image frame. Image 1c shows many bags (similar to potting soil bags) stacked into a wall-like structure. There are several wooden pallets and several cars to the right of the bags. Beyond these items is a house and two commercial buildings with no visible signs on them. Image 2c shows an exterior shot of what appears to be the People's department store at South Sound Center. A patch of brush is in the foreground and is occupying approximately 60% of the image. Image 3c also shows the People's department store, and the store's sign is visible. A portion of South Sound Center's parking lot is visible, and many cars are parked in it. Image 4c shows a car driving through the parking lot of the Safeway shown in image 44c. The car's license plate number is "JCD 534." Image 5c shows a Jose Cuervo rum billboard and a Good Year Tires service center sign. The Cuervo billboard reads "Cuervo" and "Pure Gold." Image 6c shows a portion of the same signs seen in the previous image, but the photograper has panned downward to show the Good Year service center building. Image 7c shows a blurry shot of a pickup truck driving toward the camera through a small alley. Image 8c shows an exterior shot of the Seattle Trust bank. In the left-hand half of the image is a sign which reads "Drive In Teller." Image 9c shows an exterior shot of a building, and based on the construction of the building it appears to be another side of the Seattle Trust bank building. A drive-up window is visible near the right-hand edge of the image, and above the window in a sign which reads "CLEARANCE 10 FT." Printed along one long edge of these film negative strips is "KODAK SAFETY FILM 5063."
