Mobil Oil Check, 1974. These two black and white contact print strips were created for the Lacey Leader newspaper. These images show three men outside of a gas station inserting a very long measuring stick into an underground tank. Two of the men are wearing trench coats, and they are likely from the Lacey Fire Department. Image 31 shows the two men in trench coats (Floyd Pugh at left, Don Daman at right) looking down toward the access hole of the underground tank. A third man (Russ Callies), with glasses and wearing a button-up sweater is holding a very long measuring stick against his body and is wiping his hands on a cloth. There is a car parked behind the men. This image is oriented horizontally. Image 32 shows Mr. Callies holding the measuring stick with both hands. In this image, the stick is visible going into the access hole. In this image a Lacey Fire Department logo is visible on the passenger side door of the car behind the men. Image 33 shows Mr. Callies and Mr. Daman kneeling down and gesturing or reaching toward a circular object that appears to be part of the cover for the access hole. Mr. Pugh is bending down at the waist. Image 34 is very similar to the previous image, but Mr. Callies' hand is in the access hole. Mr. Daman' face is obscured behind the man in the sweater's head. Image 35 is very similar to image 34, but Mr. Daman's face is no longer obscured. This image is oriented vertically. Image 36 is very similar to the previous image, but this image is oriented horizontally. Image 37 shows Mr. Callies reaching down into the access hole. The measuring stick is laying on the ground next to him. Image 38 shows Mr. Callies putting a lock on the cap of the access hole. Image 39 shows Mr. Callies dipping the measuring stick into the access hole. An approximately four foot section of the measuring stick is sticking out of the top of the access hole. Image 40 shows Mr. Callies having pulled the measuring stick out of the access hole. He is holding the end of the measuring stick up toward the men in the trench coats, and Mr. Pugh is pointing to the end of the stick.
These images were created for inclusion with an article in the Lacey Leader newspaper concerning rumors that a local abandoned Mobil gas station was being used as a gasoline storage site. (Lacey Leader, 2/27/1974, pg.1)Made/Created
