Train and Car/Train Wreck, 1975. These five black and white film negative strips were created for the Lacey Leader newspaper. Two different film rolls were used in the creation of these images. For the purposes of this description, these strips will be grouped according to which film roll they originally came from. Each of these groups will be assigned a lower-case letter to go along with the physical numbers on the strips (ex: 1a, 2a, 3a, 1b, 2b, 3b, etc.) to help differentiate the groups. The images in group "a" show several cars parked near to or on railroad tracks and a train approaching on said tracks. Image 6a shows a station wagon and a second car which is almost completely obscured by the station wagon stopped at a train crossing. Image 7a shows the front end of a car parked on train tracks. The front end of a Volkswagen Beetle is visible at the right-hand edge of the image frame. A train is visible approaching in the distance. Image 8a shows the front end of a car stopped approximately 10-12 feet from a set of train tracks as a train approaches. The train is visible in the upper center of the image, and the train tracks descend diagonally through the image to the left-hand edge. Image 9a shows a Plymouh Satellite automobile parked at a train crossing. There is a person visible in te car's driver's seat wearing sunglasses. They also appear to be smoking a cigarette. There is a Dodge Charger automobile on the far side of the Plymouth Satellite. Image 10a shows a Lacey Police Department cruiser stopped at a train crossing. Imag 11a shows a small convertible sports car parked at the train crossing. The license plate of the car reads "VAG 657." Image 12a shows the same sports car from the previous image still stopped at the train crossing. Here the photographer has moved further away from the car and there is a railroad crossing sign in the image foreground. Image 13a shows the train approaching from the distance. A second train car is partially visible at the upper right-hand edge of the image. Image 14a again shows the train approaching, but it is much closer to the camera than in the previous image. Image 15a is nearly identical to the previous image.
The images in group "b" show the aftermath of a collision between a train and an autmobile which appears to be a Mercury (possibly a Cougar). Image 31b shows the damaged automobile. The passenger side door and fender are torn off of the car, and the wheel is badly damaged. Two police officers and one man in coveralls and a fedora are also in the image. On the front edge of the hood is a label which appears to read "Mercury." Image 32b shows the car, but the photographer has either moved away or zoomed out from the car. One of the police officers and the man in the fedora are still speaking near the car. Image 33b shows the back end of the damaged car, as well as the train which hit it, a Lacey Police cruiser and a Thurston County ambulance. Image 34b shows the front end of the damaged car. The license plate of the car is fully visible in this image, and it reads "DFN 905."
These images were created for inclusion with articles in the Lacey Leader newspaper concerning road safety in Lacey. (Lacey Leader, 3/7/1975, pg.1; Lacey Leader, 3/28/1975, pg.1)
