Description

United Way Campaign Goal, 1974. These four black and white contact print strips were created for the Lacey Leader newspaper. Two separate film rolls were used in the creation of these images, so some of the physical numbers on the strips are duplicated. For the purposes of this description, these strips will be grouped according to which film roll they originally came from. Each group will be assigned a lower-case letter to go along with the physical strips (ex: 1a, 2a, 3a, 1b, 2b, 3b, etc.) to help differentiate between images. The images in group "a" show two men in suits standing next to a large sign displaying a campaign fundraising tracker designed to look like a thermometer. At the top, the sign reads "1974 CAMPAIGN GOAL $325,606.00" and "UNITED WAY OF THURSTON COUNTY." These images were captured outdoors. Image 7a shows the two men standing at either side of the sign. They appear to be speaking to eachother. Visible near the left-hand edge of the image is a large sign which reads "BANK" spelled out vertically. This image is oriented horizontally. Image 8a shows the man on the right pointing toward the top of the thermometer. He is also looking at the top of the thermometer. Image 9a is very similar to the previous image, but the man on the right is looking at the man on the left. Image 10a is similar to the previous two images, but here the man on the right is looking toward the camera. Image 11a is very similar to image 8a, but the man on the left is looking at something outside the right-hand edge of the image frame. Image 12a is very similar to image 8a, but the photographer has backed away or zoomed out from the two men. Image 13a is similar to the previous five images, but the photographer has moved to their left. Only the man on the right's face is visible, and he is smiling. Image 14a is very similar to the previous image, but the man on the right is not smiling. The images in group "b" show a United Way fundraising event. This event consists of approximately twenty people watching a man in a dress shirt and tie kick a football off of a tee. There are two people holding United Way banners. This event appears to have taken place outside of the Washington State Capitol building. Image 3b shows two men setting the football up on the tee as the onlookers watch. One of the men is wearing a suit and the other is wearing a tie and dress shirt but no jacket. The person furthest to the right is a man recording with a television camera. Image 4b shows the man in the suit still setting up the football on the tee while the man without the jacket is waiting to kick the ball. Image 5b shows the man with no jacket kicking the ball. Image 6b shows the man without a jacket setting the ball on the tee again. Image 7b shows the man again kicking the ball. Image 8b shows the man who had been kicking the ball signing a football for a man and woman.
