Description

Forest Clean-up, 1974. These two black and white film negative strips were created for the Lacey Leader newspaper. These images show close-ups of trash on the ground in a wooded area and several people standing in a wooded area. This wooded area is near North Thurston High School. Image 44 shows a Marlboro cigarettes pack on the ground. Image 1 shows two Marlboro cigarette packs on the ground. Images 2 and 3 are nearly identical to image 1. Image 4 shows approximately twelve cylindrical items in a frozen body of water. The items appear to be cigarette butts. Image 5 is very similar to the previous image, but the photographer has zoomed out from the cigarette butts very slightly. Image 6 shows six people standing in a wooded area and facing away from the camera Image 7 shows a woman with glasses wearing a button-up sweater standing with her arms crossed and looking toward a man in glasses and a plaid shirt. The man is facing away from the camera. These images accompanied an article concerning the accumulation of cigarette-related litter in a forested area near North Thurston High School. Students had been smoking in the area because there was not an official smoking area at the school for students. (Ken Balsley interview, 9/1/2017) (Lacey Leader, 2/6/1974, pg.1)
