Description

Smoking in the Girls' Room, 1974. These three black and white film negative strips were created for the Lacey Leader newspaper. These images show several young women smoking cigarettes in a restroom. These images were likely captured at one of the Lacey-area high schools. Image 5 shows a young woman (Terri Shurtz) in a plaid jacket smoking a cigarette in front of a mirror. The Ms. Shurtz's face is not visible. There is a paperback book sitting on a shelf beneath the mirror. Image 6 is nearly identical to image 5. Image 7 is similar to the previous two images, but the photographer has either zoomed out or moved away from Ms. Shurtz. The young woman is also leaning forward very slightly. Image 8 is similar to the previous image, but Ms. Shurtz is standing up straight and has turned slightly more toward the camera. Image 9 shows Ms. Shurtz smoking a cigarette in a bathroom stall. She is holding the cigarette in her hand. Image 10 is very similar to image 9, but Ms. Shurtz is taking a drag from the cigarette. Image 11 is very similar to image 9, but here Ms. Shurtz is holding the cigarette nearer to her face. Image 12 is nearly identical to image 11. Image 13 shows three young women standing at the open door of a bathroom stall. Only one of these three young women's faces is visible, and it is only partially visible. A fourth young woman, wearing a sweater with an apple design on it, is standing at the right-hand edge of the image and smiling. Image 14 shows two of the young women standing at the stall door from the previous image still standing at the stall door. The young woman in the apple sweater is leaning more into the image frame. Her hair is flowing out to the side, showing that she is in motion. Image 15 shows a close-up of one young woman passing a cigarette to another young woman. Neither of their faces are visible. Image 16 is very similar to the previous image, but the photographer has zoomed out slightly, making the bottom half of one of the young women's faces visible in the image. Image 17 shows a toilet bowl with a cigarette butt and a Butterfinger candy bar wrapper floating in it. These images were created to accompany an article concerning students smoking cigarettes at North Thurston High School. (Ken Balsley interview, 9/1/2017) (Lacey Leader, 1/30/1974, pg.1) Printed in alternation along one long edge of this film negative strip is "KODAK SAFETY FILM" and "KODAK TRI X PAN FILM."
