Description

Circus, 1973. These three black and white film negative strips were created for the Lacey Leader newspaper. These images show the audience at what is presumably a circus performance (no circus acts or performers are visible in any of these images). The circus appears to have taken place in Saint Martin's Marcus Pavilion. Image 5 is mostly taken up with the arched ceiling of Marcus Pavilion. In the bottom left corner are some audience members. A young girl is looking back toward the camera. Image 6 shows a portion of the audience at the circus. At the right-hand edge of the image is a young boy holding his right hand up to his mouth. To the left of the little boy is a young girl holding a bag of popcorn. Her mouth is open. Image 7 is very similar to the previous image, but the boy's hand is held more tightly against his face and the girl's mouth is not open. Image 8 shows another portion of the audience. Near the left-hand edge of the image is a man with a goatee wearing a cowboy hat. To the left of the man in the cowboy hat is a child with a fringed, plaid blanket over their shoulders. Image 9 shows another portion of the audience. There is a man with a thin cigar in his mouth at the bottom of the image. In the bottom-left corner is a young girl in a jacket and skirt with a pin in her hair. Image 10 shows another portion of the crowd. The person nearest to the camera is a young girl in a dress eating some cotton candy. Seated next to her is a man with long sideburns. Image 11 shows another portion of the crowd. Partially visible at the right-hand edge of the image is a man with sideburns in a cap with his arms wrapped around a young girl with a striped shirt. To the left of the man and little girl is a little boy leaning toward the camera with his hands on his knees. He is wearing a plaid shirt under a jacket. Image12 shows another portion of the audience. In the front row toward the left-hand side of the image is a man with a picnic basket sitting on the floor in front of him. He is wearing a jacket with a round badge or emblem on it. This man is looking back over his left shoulder. Image 13 shows another portion of the audience. Just below the center of the image is a boy looking to his left toward the camera. He is wearing a jacket with a patch on the left sleeve. The patch has a bird on it. Just beyond the young boy is a woman with glasses holding a toddler. Image 14 shows another portion of the crowd. In the center foreground of the image is a young girl with long hair wearing a sweater. She is holding a stick or other long, cylindrical object with her left hand and pointing to her right with her right hand. To the left of this girl is a boy wearing a t-shirt which reads, in part, "BROW." Image 15 shows another portion of the crowd. In the foreground is a paper cup sitting on the bleachers. The cup reads "Coca-Cola" on it. Image 16 shows a child in a striped shirt sitting on the lap of a woman with glasses.
