Description

Eaglettes, 1973. These two black and white film negative strips were created for the Lacey Leader newspaper. These images show approximately fifteen young women wearing uniforms and holding drum major-style hats standing in formation on the Plum Street sidewalk outside of the Olympia, Washington Fraternal Order of Eagles (FOE) building. These young women are members of the Olympia Eaglettes, a youth drill team sponsored by the Olympia Fraternal Order of Eagles. The three young women at the front of the formation are holding a banner which reads "1973," "EAGLES," "STATE CHAMPIONS," "A-DIV." and "WASH." There are also eight trophies arranged in a row below the banner. Image 8 shows the group from the front of the formation. There is a man standing to the left of the young women standing in formation, and one of the young women in uniform is standing to the right. This image is oriented horizontally. Image 9 is very similar to the previous image, but the man is no longer standing next to the young women in formation. This image is oriented vertically, and at the top of the image is a sign which reads "OLYMPIA FOE AERIE 21." Image 10 shows the young women in formation, but the photographer has moved to their left. This image is oriented horizontally. Image 11 is nearly identical to image 10. Image 12 is very similar to the previous two images, but the photographer has moved to their right slightly. This image is oriented vertically. Image 13 is nearly identical to image 13. Image 14 is very similar to image 13, but the photographer has moved toward the back of the formation slightly. Image 15 is similar to the previous images, but the photographer is standing very near to the FOE building. Image 16 is nearly identical to image 8. These images were created to accompany an article in the Lacey Leader newspaper concerning the Eaglette's participation in a Washington State youth drill team convention and competition held in Bothell, Washington. The young women pictured, in no particular order, are Teresa Bradley, Melody Carroll, Patricia Geiger, Deb Hobson, Julie Howse, Joleen Jacobs, Linda Kuemper, Cami Littlemore, Lori Merrill, Pam Monroe, Julie Orr, Melanie Rice, Sally Stevens, Jenice Strassman, Cheryl Ward and Kathy Workman. (Lacey Leader, 6/27/1973, pg.2) Printed in alternation along one long edge of these two film negative strips is "KODAK SAFETY FILM" and "KODAK TRI X PAN FILM."
