Description

"The Miracle Worker," "Paris Is Out" and "The Hobbit," 1974. These five black and white film negative strips were created for the Lacey Leader newspaper. These images were created using two separate rolls of film, so some of the physical numbers on the strips are repeated. For the purposes of this description, each of these film strips will be grouped according to which film rolls they originally came from. Each of these groups will be assigned a lower-case letter to go along with the physical numbers on the strips (ex: 1a, 2a, 3a, 1b, 2b, 3b, etc.) to help differentiate between images. The images in group "a" show three women in dresses (from left to right: unknown woman, Lorna Bridges [as Annie Sullivan] and Linda Bogar [as Helen Keller]) and a bearded man in a suit and tie having a conversation, and Lorna Bridges restraining Linda Bogar. These images show a Tumwater High School Drama Club production of the play "The Miracle Worker." Image 36a shows one of the women speaking to the bearded man. The woman is gesturing toward the man with her right hand. The two other women are seated. Image 37a is similar to the previous image, but the standing woman is not gesturing. Image 38a shows the same scene as the previous two images, but the photographer has zoomed in slightly. The seated woman on the right's face is only partially visible at the right-hand edge of the image. Image 39a shows the standing woman with her left hand on her left hip. She is looking down at the seated woman on the right. The woman seated on the right has an extremely agitated expression on her face. Image 40a shows the standing woman shouting at the bearded man. She has her right hand formed into a fist. Image 41a shows the standing woman wrestling with the woman on the right. The standing woman appears to be pulling the woman on the right out of her chair. Image 42a shows both of the women from the previous image down on the ground. The previously standing woman is trying to force a spoon into the other woman's mouth. Images 43a, 44a and 1a are nearly identical to image 42a. The images in group "b" show one woman (Candy Street) in a dress, two men in suits and ties (Jon Pace and Herb Larson [with beard]), and one man (Kurt Neeley) in a denim jacket performing a scene with several pieces of travel luggage nearby. These images show an Olympia Little Theatre production of "Paris Is Out." The woman is seated and all three of the men are standing. Image 24b shows the man with the beard speaking and gesturing with both hands toward the other three people. The three other people are looking toward the bearded man. Image 25b shows the woman and the two men in suits looking at the man in the denim jacket. Image 26b shows the man with the beard offering several pamphlets or similar items to the other three people, who are all looking at the pamphlets. Image 27b shows the man with the beard handing several of the pamphlets to the woman. Both of the men in suits are using one hand each to hold up a piece of luggage by a strap. The man with the beard is looking down at the woman. Image 28b is very similar to the previous image, but here the bearded man is looking toward the other man in a suit. Image 29b shows the bearded man having turned his back on the other three people. The woman appears to be trying to show him a document. Images 30b and 31b are nearly identical to image 29b. Image 32b shows a woman in glasses standing and working in an office environment. This image was captured through a doorway, and a typewriter sitting on a desk is visible on the left-hand side of the image. Image 39b shows seven young people (from top, left to right: Kathy Kochler, Debbie Hawkinson, Terry Simon, Karen Moore, Chris Collins, Mary Benson and Martha Hatcher) wearing fake beards and tunics standing in a group. The person nearest to the top of the image is also wearing a pointed hat. The person at center is holding a rock in both hands. This image has a rounded border, and it is oriented horizontally. Image 40b is very similar to the previous image, but it does not have a rounded border. Images 41b-44b are nearly identical to image 40b, but these images are oriented vertically. The images in group "a" were created to accompany a notice in the Lacey Leader newspaper concerning a Tumwater High School Drama Club Production of "The Miracle Worker." (Lacey Leader, 1/9/1974, pg.1) The images in group "b" show an Olympia Little Theatre production of "Paris Is Out" and a Tumwater High School production of "The Hobbit. (Lacey Leader, 2/20/1974, pg.1 & 10)
