Service Station Mechanics, 1974. These four black and white contat print strips were created for the Lacey Leader newspaper. These images were created using two inidvidual film rolls, so some of the physical numbers on the strips are repeated. For the purposes of this description, these strips will be grouped according to which film roll they originally came from. Each group will be assigned a lower-case letter to go along with the physical numbers on the strips (ex: 1a, 2a, 3a, 1b, 2b, 3b, etc.) to help differentiate between images. The images in group "a" show six different men posing individually for portrait-style photos. Image 35a shows a man (Doug Drew) with a mustache from the shoulders-up. A car's license plate is visible to the left of the man's head, and the number on the plate is GUK-Z35 (the "Z" may instead be a 7). The man is looking toward the camera. This image is oriented horizontally. Image 36a is very similar to the previous image, but here the man is either looking downward or blinking. Image 37a is very similar to image 35a, but this image is oriented vertically. There is a small patch visible on the man's shirt which appears to read "Minute Man." Image 38a shows a man (Earl Poage) with "Earl" embroidered into his shirt. He is looking toward the camera. Image 39a is similar to the previous image, but here the man is looking downward. Image 40a is very similar to the previous image, but here the man's head is oriented more toward the camera. He is still looking downward. Image 41a shows a tire with a reflective hubcap. Image 42a shows a man (Floyd Westman) in a jacket and cap which both have Texaco badges on them. There is a second patch on the man's jacket which reads "Floyd." The man's face is oriented toward the camera, and he is looking toward the camera. Image 43a is similar to the previous image, but the man's head is turned toward the left-hand side of the image frame. The man is still looking toward the camera. Image 44a shows a man (Jess McGee) in glasses and a ushanka hat looking toward the right-hand side of the image frame. There is a car on a lift behind the man, and one of the car's tires is immediately to the left of the man's head. Image 1a shows the same man as in the previous image, but his head is oriented more toward the camera. He is also looking downward slightly. Image 2a shows the man in the ushanka hat looking toward the camera. Image 3a shows a man (Al Willis) in a baseball cap with a Texaco patch on it. He is looking toward the camera, and there is a man with a mustache visible at the right-hand edge of the image frame. Image 4a is similar to the previous image, but here there is a woman visible in the background to the right of Al Willis. Image 5a shows a man (Larry Battson) in a jacket with the name "Larry" embroidered on the chest. The man is looking downward. Image 6a is similar to the previous image, but here the man is looking toward the camera. The images in group "b" show two different men posing individually for portrait-style photos. Image 2b shows a man (Woody Heron) in a jacket looking directly at the camera and smiling. Image 3b shows a man (Dave Sanchez) with a mustache wearing a jacket with an Exxon badge on the chest. The man is facing toward the right-hand side of the image frame. Image 4b is nearly identical to image 3b. Image 5b is very similar to the previous image, but the man's head is turned more toward the right-hand side of the image frame.
These images were created to accompany an article in the Lacey Leader newspaper concerning fuel rationing at local gas stations. (Lacey Leader, 2/13/1974, pg.1)Made/Created
