Description

Down Syndrome Parents Dinner, 1974. These images were created for the Lacey Leader newspaper. These images show individual portrait-style photos of three different young people, and a little girl sitting on a woman's lap. Image 8 shows a young person with shoulder-length hair wearing a button-up shirt with a large plaid pattern. This person's head and body are oriented toward the left-hand side of the image, and they are looking toward the camera and smiling. Image 9 shows a young man (Jim Butigan) in glasses wearing a sweater-vest over a dress shirt. His head and body are oriented toward the right-hand side of the image, and he is looking toward the camera. Image 10 is very similar to image 9, but here Mr. Butigan's head and body are oriented toward the left-hand side of the image frame. Image 11 shows a young man (Lyle Unwin) with chin-length hair and sideburns wearing a jacket over a button-up shirt. His head and body are oriented toward the right-hand side of the image, and he is looking toward the camera and smiling. Image 12 is very similar to image 11, but here the Mr. Unwin's head and body are oriented toward the left-hand side of the image. Visible on the man's jacket is an Olympia Beer patch. The patch is designed to look like a horseshoe, and it reads "GOOD LUCK" at the top and "It's the Water" across the center. Image 13 shows a little girl (Kasey Leonard) with bangs wearing a dress with plaid on the chest and arms. She is holding a Raggedy Ann or Raggedy Andy doll and is smiling. This little girl has Down Syndrome. She is sitting on the lap of a woman (Judy Wheeler) wearing a floral-print dress. The woman is smiling and looking toward the little girl. The images of Jim Butigan were created for inclusion with an article in the Lacey Leader newspaper concerning five Nisqually Middle School students participating in a history contest put on by the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR). (Lacey Leader, 6/19/1974, pg. 11) The images of Lyle Unwin were created for inclusion with an article concerning Mr. Unwin receiving the Duane Cordiner Memorial Award, an athletic award given by Tumwater High School. (Lacey Leader, 6/19/1974, pg. 12) These images were created for inclusion with a notice printed in the Lacey Leader newspaper concerning an upcoming fundraising dinner to benefit children with disabilities. (Lacey Leader 6/19/1974, pg.1)
