Description

People on Gas Shortage, 1973. These five black and white film negative strips were created for the Lacey Leader newspaper. These images were created using two separate film rolls, so some of the physical numbers on the strips are duplicated. For the purposes of this description, these strips will be grouped according to which film roll they originally came from. Each of these groups will be assigned a lower-case letter to go along with the physical numbers on the strips (ex: 1a, 2a, 3a, 1b, 2b, 3b, etc.) to help differentiate between images. The images in group "a" show six different men posing for photos, and a sign outside of a gas station concerning gasoline rationing. Image 36a shows a balding man with horn-rimmed glasses wearing a jacket over a polo shirt. A patch with the letters "AR" (most likely reads "ARCO" in its entirety) visible on it is on the left breast of the polo shirt. The man is looking toward the right-hand side of the image frame and smiling. This image is oriented horizontally. Image 37a is very similar to the previous image, but here the man is looking toward the camera. Image 38a is similar to image 36a, but the man is not smiling. This image is oriented vertically. Image 39a shows a man wearing a baseball cap with a patch on the front which reads "TEXACO." He is also wearing a jacket over a button-up shirt. The man is looking toward the right-hand side of the image and is not smiling. This image is oriented horizontally. Image 40a is very similar to the previous image, but here the man is looking toward the camera. Image 41a is very similar to image 40a, but this image is oriented vertically. Image 42a shows a man wearing a button-up shirt over a t-shirt. Visible on the wall behind the man is an analog clock showing that the time is approximately 5:35. The man is looking toward the left-hand side of the image frame and he is smiling. This image is oriented horizontally. Image 43a is nearly identical to image 42a. Image 44a is very similar to the previous two images, but the man is doing a closed-lipped smile. This image is oriented vertically. Image 1a shows a balding man in horn-rimmed glasses wearing a jacket with "Maverik" embroidered on the right breast and "Clarence" embroidered on the left breast. He is looking toward the left-hand side of the image and is not smiling. This image is oriented horizontally. Image 2a is very similar to the previous image, but the man appears to be speaking. Image 3a is very similar to the previous two images, but the man's mouth is completely closed. This image is oriented vertically. Image 4a shows a man with his hair parted on the left side wearing a jacket over a pinstriped button-up shirt. He is wearing a t-shirt under the pinstriped shirt. His head and body are oriented toward the left-hand side of the image, and he is looking toward the camera. This image is oriented horizontally. Image 5a is very similar to the previous image, but the photographer has backed away or zoomed out from the man. Image 6a is very similar to the previous two images, but this image is oriented vertically. Image 7a shows a sign which reads "GASOLINE SALES RATIONED" and "10 MAX DELIVERY." This sign is mounted on a stand outside of a Chevron gas station. Image 8a is similar to the previous image, but here the photographer has moved further away or zoomed out from the sign. Image 9a shows a man in a jacket standing with his left hand on a door frame. A large discoloration on the film is obscuring his face. This image is oriented horizontally. Image 10a shows the same man from the previous image. The man's hair is dissheveled and his eyes are closed. The images in group "b" show a man with slicked-back hair wearing a jacket over a button-up shirt. A name is embroidered on the left-hand breast of the jacket, but it is not fully visible. It may read "Larry." The man is standing with his right hand on his hip and his left arm extending outside of the image frame. This image is oriented horizontally. Image 37b is very similar to the previous image, but this image is oriented vertically. Image 38b is nearly identical to image 26b. Printed in alternation along both long edges of these film negative strips is "KODAK SAFETY FILM" and "KODAK TRI X PAN FILM."
