Lacey School 1st and 2nd grade class from the 1919-1920 school year depicted in black and white 6 1/2" x 8 1/2" photograph with an unevenly spaced border surrounding the image. The front row is comprised on nine boys and three girls, the second row eight girls and six boys and the back row has seven boys and five girls. The teacher, Mrs. Hilda Hoppe is standing to the left of the group with her hands clasped in front of her. The group is pictured outside in front of the Lacey School. The students in the front row are sitting in the tall grass, while the ones in the back two rows are standing. The back row is standing on what appears to be a bench. The top half of the photo includes a large portion of the school. Visible are the windows, open for fresh air and the sign above the entrance which reads: "LACEY SCHOOL DIST. 10." At the bottom of the image is written in white: "547" at lower left; "'LACEY SCHOOL' GRADES 1-2 - 1919 - 20" in center and at right in cursive: "Cooke Photos."
On the back of the photo, in the upper right corner is written in pencil: "neg #3504" presumably by museum staff. On the right edge, written vertically in cursive pencil is: "(1 grade) 2 Grade 1920 Mel 1st on left, back row." Interpretation of this inscription tells us that Melvin C. Heusman, who is identified in other photos from this donor was in 2nd grade in this photo even though two grades are pictured and that he is located in the back row at the far left. Stamped in ink is the inscription: "Extra copies 25¢ each post paid. G. F. COOKE, So. Tacoma, Wash.
Also identified by her daughter is Cleo Belle Gillis, who is in the second row, second student from the left.Made/Created
