Description

Foy Store, Unknown Date. This black and white photograph shows the exterior front of the Foy Store. It also shows, from left to right, an unknown man (most likely either Gordon L. Foy, Sr. or Henry Turner), Billie Bragg and an unknown state patrolman (likely Stacey Mattson). The unknown man on the left has closely cropped dark hair and is wearing circular-framed glasses. He is also wearing a buttoned cardigan over a dress shirt and tie, and slacks. He is holdig a binder or ledger in his right hand. Ms. Bragg has chin-length, somewhat curly hair and may be wearing glasses with very thin frames. She is also wearing a long, buttoned jacket. In her right hand is a kit case which reads "FIRST AID" on the side. The state patrolman is wearing a state patrol uniform, including the cap. Immediately behind the state patrolman is a Washington State Patrol automobile. This automobile has a van-style back end with double doors at the rear. Printed on the side is "WASHINGTON STATE PATROL." This vehicle is parked immediately in front of the store, and it is facing the store. The state patrolman is resting his right arm on the open driver's side window of the automobile. The store itself has a front door with a peaked arch. This door is open. To the right of the door is a sign which reads "FIRST AID STATION" and "AMERICAN RED CROSS." To the right of this sign is a double window with many small panes of glass. To the left of the front door is a small box on the wall which reads "DROP LETTERS." To the left of this box a portion of a window like the one previously described is visible. A portion of roof projects horizontally out from the front of the store. Above this roof portion is a sign which reads "GENUINE Western Giant Tiles FOR SALE HERE." Above this sign is another sign, which reads "POST OFFICE LACEY WASHINGTON." Above this post office sign is another sign, which reads "FOY'S STOP 'N' SHOP" and "CASH" and "GROCERIES HAY FEED AND FUEL MEAT-MARKET." Hanging off of this sign is a flag-style sign which reads "FIRST CHOICE! RPM MOTOR OIL 25 c." A portion of the front tire, fender and hood of a second car is visible in the bottom-left corner of the image. On the far right-hand end of the store is a portion of peaked roof which projects out from the front of the building. A circular sign hanging from the roof reads "Standard Oil CREDIT CARDS good here." A smaller circular sign hangs from a rod projecting horizontally from the peak of the roof. This sign reads "NORTH COAST LINES." A house is partially visible beyond the right hand end of the store building. "The Foy Store was a commercial landmark in Lacey for many years. Gordon Foy constructed the building on the corner of Pacific Avenue and Lacey Street in 1929. The store helped provide groceries, meats, hay and feed, and general merchandise to the local community. In addition, the Lacey Post Office was housed in the building from the late 1920s into the 1950s. Miss Ann Foy, the sister of Gordon Foy, served as Lacey's post mistress during that time. In the historical photograph shown above, the simplified Mission style of the Foy Store can be clearly seen. Later the store was purchased by Henry C. and Margaret Turner. They renamed the business Turner's Market and added a laundry at the location. Since then a number of businesses have used the building. The original roof-line still remains, hiding behind the modern facade." (Lacey Life, January 22, 2000). Henry and Margaret Turner purchased the store in 1939 ("Parade Fetes Fire Department's Founder," Morning Olympian, 6-29-1977).
