Party for Ann Foy, 1940. This black and white photograph shows five women gathered around a dinner table in a home. They are celebrating Anne Foy's 25th year as Lacey's postmistress. The party was held at Anne Foy's home. From left to right the women are: Irene Kenney, Anne Foy, Mary Foy, Ollie Foy VanSlyke and Theresa Foy. Ms. Kenney is seated at the table, and her back is nearly in line with the left-hand edge of the image. Her hair is up and she is wearing a dark, short-sleeved dress. She is smiling and her head is oriented somehat toward the right-hand side of the image. Her right arm is raised, but it does not appear that anything is in her hand. Anne Foy is facing toward the camera and smiling, and her body is oriented somewhat toward the right-hand side of the image. She has chin-length, curly hair and is wearing glasses. She is also wearing a dark, short-sleeved dress with a white frill at the neck and chest. Her arms are down at her sides. Mary Foy is also looking toward the camera, but she is not smiling. Her body is oriented somewhat toward the left-hand side of the image. Her hair is up and she is wearing glasses with thick, circular rims. She is wearing a dark, long-sleeved dress with a pattern of small, light-colored objects which are likely flowers. She is wearing a corsage to the left-hand side of the neck. There are buttons down thr front of her dress. Her arms are down at her sides. Ollie Foy VanSlyke is seated at the table and her body is oriented toward the left-hand side of the image. Her head is turned somewhat toward the camera, and she is looking toward the camera. She either has short hair or is wearing her hair up. She is wearing a dark dress with sleeves to the mid-forearm. There is lace at the neck and sleeve ends. Her hands are in her lap. Theresa Foy is standing with her body oriented somewhat toward the left-hand side of the image and she is facing the camera. She has chin-length hair with the ends and bangs curled. She is wearing a vertically-striped shirt and a knee-length skirt. The dinner table has a lace tablecloth and a bouquet in a vase at the center. Next to the vase is a frosted cake. A window with sheer curtains is beyond the table. To the left of the window is a piece of art depicting what appears to be a person in a hooded robe. Below this piece of art is a much smaller piece of art. The subject matter of this second piece of art is unclear because it is so small. To the right of the window is a paneled door.
Written in blue pen along the top border, from left to right, is: "Irene Kenny," "Ann Foy Postmistress 45 yrs.," "Mary Foy 80th Birthday," "Ollie Foy VanSlyke," "Theresa Foy" and two words which are indecipherable that both begin with the letter D. Note that "Kenny" is misspelled on the top of the photograph. Sources disagree on whether "Ann" or "Anne" is the correct spelling for Ms. Foy's name. The note stating that the photograph depicts Mary Foy's 80th birthday is also incorrect. ("Town of Lacey Honors Postmistress Anne Foy," Daily Olympian, November 13, 1940)Made/Created
