Description

Construction and Buildings, 1977. These seven black and white film negative strips were created for the Lacey Leader newspaper. These images were created using three separate film rolls, so some of the physical numbers on the strips are repeated. For the purposes of this description, these strips will be grouped according to which roll they originally came from. Each group will be assigned a lower-case letter to go along with the physical numbers on the strips (ex: 1a, 2a, 3a, 1b, 2b, 3b, etc.) to help differentiate between images. The images in group "a" appear to show two cranes lifting a boom truck, and a building. Image 17a shows two cranes lifting up a boom truck at a road construction site. Just below the center of the image is a highway sign indicating the direction to Portland, Oregon on Interstate-5 South. This image is oriented vertically. Image 18a is similar to the previous image, but here the image is oriented horizontally. Image 19a is very similar to image 17a, but here the photographer has zoomed in on the larger of the two cranes. Image 20a shows a side-view of the boom truck as it is being lifted by the cranes. This image is oriented horizontally. Image 21a is very similar to the previous image, but here the image is oriented vertically. Image 22a and 23a are nearly identical to image 21a. Image 24a is nearly identical to image 20a. Image 25a is very similar to the previous image, but the boom truck is hanging at a more diagonal angle than in the previous images. Image 26a shows the cranes and boom truck from a different angle. A man wearing a cap is leaning against a vehicle at the right-hand side of this image. Image 27a shows the front end of one of the cranes. Approximately five people are standing near the front of the crane. Printed on the driver's side door of the crane is "SARGENT Tyee CO." Image 28a shows an office-type building amidst evergreen trees and next to a parking lot. Images 29a through 33a are nearly identical to image 28a. The images in group "b" show a construction crane tipped over near a highway overpass, a man and a woman posing for a photo, and an exterior shot of what appears to be the drive-thru portion of a bank building. Image 30b shows a construction crane tipped over on its side next to a highway overpass. Several men are visible in the bottom left corner of the image. Image 31b is similar to the previous image, but now the group of men is in the bottom right corner. Image 32b is similar to the previous two images, but here there are two men speaking just to the right of center of the image. Image 33b is very similar to the previous image, but now a third man is visible near the left-hand edge of the image frame. Image 34b shows a woman in a patterned dress and a man in a suit (Dick Pust) posing together for a photo. Image 40b shows an exterior shot of what appears to be the drive-thru portion of a bank building. There is a small, sandwich board-style road construction barricade near the building. Images 41b through 43b are nearly identical to image 40b. The images in group "c" show a steamroller engaged in road work near what appears to be the intersection of 6th Avenue and Sleater Kinney Road in Lacey, Washington. Image 12c shows a man driving the steamroller in the left-hand portion of the image. Image 13c is very similar to the previous image, but the man and the steamroller are no longer in the image. Image 14c is similar to the previous two images, but here the photographer has backed up a considerable distance. A steamroller is approaching the camera from the far distance. Image 15c is nearly identical to image 14c, but the steamroller is closer. Image 16c is similar to the previous two images, but again the steamroller is closer. Image 17c shows the steamroller still closer to the camera. Printed at intervals along one long edge of these film negative strips is "KODAK SAFETY FILM 5063."
