Description

Local Businesses, 1976. These thirteen black and white contact print strips were created for the Lacey Leader newspaper. These images were created using four separate film strips, so some of the physical numbers on the strips are repeated. For the purposes of this description, these strips will be grouped according to the film rolls from which they originally came. Each group will be assigned a lower-case letter to add to the physical numbers on the strips (ex: 1a, 2a, 3a, 1b, 2b, 3b, etc.) to help differentiate between images. The images in group "a" show exterior shots of various Lacey businesses, including: a Baskin-Robbins ice cream parlor, the Roundhouse Restaurant, an Albertson's grocery store, a House of Values store, Sambo's Restaurant, South Sound Bank, an Arctic Circle restaurant and a McDonald's restaurant. Image 15a shows a Baskin-Robbins ice cream parlor. A portion of an adjacent road is visible diagonally crossing the bottom-left corner of the image. Image 16a is similar to the previous image, but the photographer has moved to their right. No portion of the adjacent road is visible in this image. Image 17a is nearly identical to image 16a. Image 18a shows the Roundhouse Restaurant. A flag is flying on top of the building, a leafless sapling is visible near the left-hand edge of the image, and a light pole is visible near the right-hand edge of the image. Image 19a is similar to the previous image, but the photgrapher has zoomed in or moved closer to the building. The flag and sapling are not visible in this image, and only a portion of the light on top of the light pole is visible in this image. Image 20a shows the train car projecting from the side of the Roundhouse Restaurant. The photographer appears to be standing approximately 12 feet from the end of the train car. Image 21a also shows the train car attached to the Roundhouse, but here the photographer appears to be standing much further away from the building. Image 22a shows the same Baskin-Robbins location as seen in images 15-17. Here a dumpster is visible near the right-hand edge of this image frame. Image 23a shows an Albertson's grocery store. A parked station wagon is partially visible at the right-hand edge of the image. Image 24a is nearly identical to image 23a. Image 25a shows the Albertson's store from a front-on perspective. A reflection of the Albertson's sign on the building is visible in a large puddle in the parking lot. Image 26a shows a House of Values store. Many cars are parked in the foreground. The nearest of these cars to the camera is a station wagon. Image 27a is nearly identical to image 26a. Image 28a shows a Sambo's Restaurant. A coupe-style car is visible leaving the parking lot near the left-hand edge of the image frame. Image 29a also shows the Sambo's location. Visible in the background near the left-hand edge of the image is a sign on a store which reads "DISCOUNT FABRICS." Image 30a shows an ATM in a small, covered, concrete free-standing structure. Image 31a shows a sign for South Sound National Bank. A much smaller sign near the right-hand edge of the image reads "BANK PARKING ONLY." Image 32a shows an Arctic Circle restaurant. Image 33a shows a McDonald's restaurant. Three power poles arranged in a row are visible near the right-hand edge of the image frame. Image 34a is similar to the previous image, but here the photographer has panned to their left slightly. Only a portion of one of the power poles is visible in this image. Image 35a shows the same McDonald's location as seen in the previous two images. Here a person in a jacket is visible walking away from the camera near the right-hand edge of the image. Image 36a again shows the McDonald's restaurant. This image focuses on a small garden of small evergreen trees and bushes at the foot of the McDonald's sign. The images in group "b" show an Arctic Circle restaurant, a Lacey Center sign, the B&R Sales store, the J.B.'s Western Wear store, the M.B. Electronics Music Bar, a Paulson's store, the Chinese Gardens restaurant, a 50% Off Auto Parts store, the Los Hermanos restaurant, the A Child's Place store, a 7-11 store, and the Lacey branch of Capital Savings bank. Image 39b shows the Arctic Circle restaurant. A busy road is visible at the right-hand side of the image. Image 40b shows a tall sign for the Lacey Center shopping center. Stores listed on the sign are B&R Sales, J.B.'s Western Wear. The sign also reads "Carpets," and "Linoleum." Image 41b shows the B&R Sales store. A pickup truck with a canopy and a leafless deciduous tree are visible at the right-hand side of the image. Image 42b is very similar to the previous image, but here the photographer has moved backward slightly, making a sidewalk visible in the foreground. Image 43b is nearly identical to image 42b. Image 44b shows the J.B.'s Western Wear store. In this image, the front of the store is facing nearly toward the camera, and the left-hand side of the store is also partially visible. Image 1b is similar to the previous image, but here the photographer has moved to their right slightly, capturing the front of the store at a front-on angle. The left-hand side of the store is not visible in this image. Image 2b shows the M.B. Electronics Music Bar. A car is parked near the right-hand edge of the image frame. Image 3b is very similar to the previous image, but the photographer has moved to their right and closer to the store. The back end of the car is visible in this image, and there is a puddle in the bottom-right corner of this image. Image 4b again shows the M.B. Electronics Music Bar, but here the photographer has moved considerably to their left. Only a small portion of the front of the car is visible in this image. Image 5b shows a Paulson's store. The photographer is near to the right-hand end of the front of the building. A small area of gravel and small bushes is occupying the bottom-right corner of this image. Image 6b also shows the Paulson's store, but here the photographer is nearest to the left-hand end of the front of the building. Many motorcycles are visible parked along the left-hand side of the building. Image 7b shows the Chinese Gardens restaurant. Image 8b shows the 50% Off Auto Parts store. Image 9b shows the Los Hermanos restaurant. Image 10b shows the A Child's Place toy store. Image 11b shows a 7-11 store. The 7-11 sign is at left, and the 7-11 store itself is at right. Image 12b also shows the 7-11 store, but here the sign is at right and the store is at left. Image 13b shows the Lacey branch of the Capital Savings bank. The images in group "c" show many shots of the Los Hermanos restaurant. Image 6c shows a Chevrolet El Camino and a smaller car parked in the parking lot adjacent to the restaurant. Image 7c is very similar to the previous image, but here a person is visible walking toward the restaurant's entrance. Image 8c is nearly identical to image 6c. Image 9c is similar to the previous images, but here the photographer has moved closer to the El Camino. Image 10c is very similar to the previous image, but the photographer has moved slightly to their right. Image 11c is nearly identical to image 8c. Image 12c is nearly identical to the previous image. Images 13c through 16c are nearly identical to image 12c. The images in group "d" show the Gemini Properties Incorporated building. Image 8d shows a very long mud puddle at the left-hand side of the image frame. Image 9d is nearly identical to the previous image. Image 10d is similar to the previous two images, but here the photographer has moved to their right and closer to the building. The long mud puddle at the left is much less visible here. Image 11d is nearly identical to image 10d. Image 12d is again similar to the previous images, but the photographer has again moved closer to the building.
