Description

"Town Meeting" Sign, 1976. These six black and white film negative strips were created for the Lacey Leader newspaper. These images show Lacey Mayor Karen Fraser and an unknown man being lifted onto a billboard catwalk by a fire engine's cherry picker, posing for photos on the billboard catwalk, then being taken down from the billboard by the cherry picker. The billboard reads "TOWN MEETING MARCH 20 EVERYONE WELCOME" and bears a large illustration of Uncle Sam. Image 39 shows Ms. Fraser and the unknown man in the cherry picker's basket and nearing the billboard. The Uncle Sam illustration is almost completely visible in the left-hand third of the image. This image is oriented horizontally. Image 40 is very similar to the previous image, but here the image is oriented vertically and the Uncle Sam illustration is not visible. Image 41 shows a blurry shot of a building. Image 42 is very similar to image 39, but here the unknown man is visible walking across the billboard's catwalk. Image 43 is very similar to image 42, but here both Ms. Fraser and the unknown man are standing on the catwalk. Ms. Fraser is looking toward the camera. Image 44 shows Ms. Fraser kneeling down and reaching out to touch the M in "welcome" with both hands. The unknown man is standing and touching the second E in "welcome." Image 1 shows both Ms. Fraser and the unknown man kneeling down and touching the same letters as in the previous image. The man is looking outward and down from the billboard. Image 2 is very similar to the previous image, but here both Ms. Fraser and the unknown man are both looking in the general direction of the camera. This image is oriented vertically. Image 3 is nearly identical to image 2, but here the image is oriented horizontally. Image 4 is very similar to the previous image, but here the cherry picker is no longer visible. Image 5 shows Ms. Fraser kneeling down behind a small sign attached to the billboard's catwalk which reads "OLYMPIA SEWER & SEPTIC TANK CO." Her left hand is resting on top of this small sign. Image 6 is similar to image 5, ut here Ms. Fraser is making a fist with her right hand and appears to be rubbing something off of the small sign or hitting it with her fist. Image 7 shows Ms. Fraser touching the M in "welcome" with her left hand and the unknown man touching the E with his right hand. Both are looking toward the camera and smiling. Image 8 is very similar to image 7, but here both Ms. Fraser and the unknown man are touching their respective letters with both hands. Image 9 is virtually identical to image 8. Image 10 shows Ms. Fraser and the unknown man standing on the billboard catwalk and looking toward the cherry picker basket. Images 11 through 14 show Ms. Fraser and the unknown man getting into the cherry picker basket. Image 23 shows a view of Ms. Fraser and the unknown man standing on the billboard catwalk, but the image was captured from the ground and is lined up with the axis of the cherry picker's crane arm. The fire engine which the crane is attached to is visible in this image. Image 24 is virtually identical to image 8. Images 25 through 27 are nearly identical to image 1. Image 28 is nearly identical to image 8. Image 29 shows Ms. Fraser again kneeling behind the small Olympia Sewer and Septic Tank Company sign. Image 30 shows Ms. Fraser touching the M on the billboard with both hands. The unknown man is not in this image. Image 31 shows a shot lined up with the axis of the crane arm and looking up toward Ms. Fraser and the unknown man on the billboard catwalk. This image is oriented vertically. Image 32 is very similar to the previous image, but here the image is oriented horizontally. Printed in alternation along one long edge of all of these film negative strips is "KODAK SAFETY FILM" and "KODAK TRI X PAN FILM."
