Miss Washington Universe, 1976. These six black and white contact print strips were created for the Lacey Leader newspaper. These images show a publicity event for the 1976 Miss Washington Universe pageant, as well as scenes from the pageant event itself. Image 25 shows a man holding a television camera on his shoulder. The camera is attached to a piece of electronic equipment mounted on the man as a backpack. The man is shown nearly in profile, and from the knees up. Image 26 shows the cameraman from behind. In the background is a pageant contestant walking across the frame from left to right. Image 27 is very similar to the previous image, but here one pageant contestant is visible standing near the left-hand edge of the image wearing a sash reading "MISS WAWAWAI", and a shorter contestant is standing near the right-hand side of the image wearing a sash reading "MISS TRI-CITIES." Image 28 is very similar to the previous image, but here the contestant nearest to the left-hand edge of the image is walking across the frame from left to right. She is wearing a sash which reads "MISS CHENEY." Image 29 is again similar to the previous image, but here the contestant nearest to the left-hand edge of the image is wearing a sash which reads "THE FACTS NEWSPAPER." Image 30 shows seven contestants standing in a row. The contestant on the far left is wearing a sash which reads "MISS MARYSVILLE." Image 31 shows the cameraman seen in images 25 through 29 standing next to a man with a beard in the image foreground while approximately ten contestants are visible standing in a row in the background. Image 32 shows the cameraman standing just to the right of the center of the image. The bearded man is standing at the left-hand edge of the image and the row of contestants is still in the background. Image 33 shows seven pageant contestants standing in a row. The contestant on the far left is wearing a sash which reads "MISS EL PATIO." Image 34 shows the cameraman, the bearded man and a third man is a plaid blazer standing in the foreground and looking toward a line of pageant contestants exiting a building. Image 35 is similar to the previous image, but the bearded man is not in the image and the line of contestants is skirting a pool. Image 36 is similar to the previous image, but the photographer has moved in such a way that the cameraman and the man in the plaid jacket (here seen holding a smaller video camera) are obscuring many of the contestants walking in line. Image 37 shows the line of contestants walking up onto a wooden stage. The third woman in line's sash reads "MISS EDMONDS." Image 38 is very similar to the previous image, but here the third woman in line's sash reads "MISS KENMORE." Image 39 shows all of the contestants posing or a group photo. The Washington State Capitol Building is visible in the far background. Image 4 is very similar to the previous image, but here the photographer has panned to the right slightly. Image 43 shows a contestant in a long formal dress wearing a crown or tiara standing in front of what appears to be a large wicker chair. Other contestants are visible seated to the right and left of the first contestant. Image 44 shows four contestants standing in a row in front of three young men. The two contestants at right are holding trophies. Image 1 shows two contestants standing at center, a third at the left, and a man in a suit at right speaking into a microphone and facing away from the camera. Image 2 is similar to the previous image, but the man has turned toward the camera. Image 3 shows a contestant with a crown standing in the midst of a group of other contestants, several of whom are wearing crowns and tiaras. Image 4 shows a contestant wearing a crown and a sash which reads "WASHINGTON" surrounded by other contestants. The contestant with the Washington sash is facing toward the right-hand side of the image frame. Image 5 is very similar to the previous image, but here the contestant in the Washington sash is facing toward the camera. Image 6 shows the contestant in the Washington sash seated in the large wicker chair. She is flanked by other contestants sitting in smaller chairs. Image7 is very similar to image 6, but here the photographer has panned to the left slightly, and a man in a bowtie is visible at the left-hand side of the image. Image 8 is similar to the previous two images, but here the photographer has zoomed in on the contestant in the large wicker chair.Made/Created
