Working Women, 1976. These nine black and white contact print strips were created for the Lacey Leader newspaper. These images were created using four separate film rolls, so some of the physical numbers on the strips are repeated. For the purposes of this description, the strips will be grouped according to the film roll from which they originally came. Each group will be assigned a lower-case letter to go along with the physical numbers on the strips (ex: 1a, 2a, 3a, 1b, 2b, 3b, etc.) to help differentiate between images. The images in group "a" show a woman (Jo Knight) wearing a top with an island scene printed on it seated at a desk in a brick-walled office. The woman's name is visible on a name placard on the desk. One image shows Ken Balsley. Image 5a shows Ken Balsley leaning down over a desk and writing. Image 6a shows Ms. Knight looking at the camera with a large smile on her face. Her hands are not visible, and appear to be in her lap. Image 7a is similar to image 6a, but here Ms. Knight is looking to her right and upward slightly. Image 8a shows Ms. Knight looking downward and writing. She is not smiling. Image 9a is very similar to image 8a, but Ms. Night is looking directly at the camera. Image 10a shows Ms. Knight looking down and smiling while writing on a notepad. Image 11a shows Ms. Knight looking at the camera and not smiling. Her right hand is still in a writing posture on the notepad. Image 12a is very similar to image 10a, but here the photographer has moved to their right approximately two feet. Image 13a is very similar to image 11a, but here Ms. Knight is smiling slightly. Image 14a shows Ms. Knight holding a telephone handset to her left ear while looking downward and writing on the notepad. Image 15a is very similar to image 14a, but here Ms. Knight is looking in a more forward direction. Her eyes are partially closed. Image 16a is very similar to image 15a, but here Ms. Knight's eyes are fully opened and she is looking in the general direction of the camera. Image 17a shows Ms. Knight looking upward slightly and directly toward the camera. She is not smiling, and no portion of her desk is visible in this image. Image 18a is very similar to the previous image, but here Ms. Knight is smiling. Image 19a shows Ms. Knight looking to her left toward the camera. She is not smiling. A large window and several other desks are visible in the background. Image 20a is very similar to image 19a, but here Ms. Knight is smiling slightly. Image 21a is very similar to image 20a, but here Ms. Knight has a larger smile on her face. Image 22a shows Ms. Knight looking to her right toward the camera. A window is visible in the background just beyond Ms. Knight. A Pay 'n Save store is visile through the window. Image 23a is nearly identical to image 22a. Image 24a is very similar to image 13a, but here Ms. Knight appears to be laughing.
The images in group "b" show an unknown woman in a striped button-up shirt in a small shop which may be operated out of a home. There are many houseplants, mostly ferns, either hanging from the ceiling or sitting on shelves and tables. There is also a large and very ornate cash register on a counter. Imge 14b shows a typewriter on a desk. A woman's back is partially visible at the right-hand edge of this image. Image 15b shows the unknown woman standing behind the cash register. She is touching the register with her right hand. Image 16b is similar to image 15b, but here the woman is touching the counter with her right hand. Image 17b shows the woman again touching the register with her right hand. She is smiling and her eyes are closed. The counter is not visible in this image. Image 18b shows the woman seated on a couch, looking toward the camera and smiling. Image 19b is very similar to the previous image, but here the woman is looking toward her left and away from the camera. Image 20b shows the woman standing next to a fern hanging in a basket from the ceiling. She is looking toward the camera and smiling. Image 21b shows the woman holding a small watering can or mister up to the fern. She is looking toward the camera and smiling Image 22b is very similar to image 21b, but the woman is holding the watering can or mister up higher and she is not looking toward the camera.
The images in group "c" show a woman (Agnes Ulery) seated at a desk, and mostly speaking on the telephone. Ms. Ulery appears to be a police officer or firefighter, as she has a badge on the left breast of her shirt. Ms. Ulery's name can be seen on the nametag on her shirt. Image 11c shows Ms. Ulery holding the telephone handset to her left ear and holding a pen in her right hand. She is leaning on her left elbow and looking off toward her right. Image 12c is is nearly identical to image 11c. Image 13c is similar to image 12c, but here Ms. Ulery has turned her body more toward her right. Image 14c shows Ms. Ulery holding a telephone handset to her eft ear and pushing a button on the phone with her right index finger. Image 15c shows Ms. Ulery having just set down the phone handset. Image 16c shows Ms. Ulery leaning forward slightly as she reaches for something beyond the left-hand edge of the image frame. Image 17c shows Ms. Ulery with her mouth wide open and her head tilter slightly to her right. Image 18c shows Ms. Ulery holding her right hand up to her forehead. She is also holding a pen in that hand.
The images in group "d" show a woman (Martha Berkey) seated at a desk and speaking on the telephone. Other images on the strip show a bookshelf and a closed door. Ms. Berkey's name is visible on a name placard on her desk. Image 41d shows to lower-left portion of a bookshelf. Image 42d shows the upper portion of a closed door. Image 43d shows Ms. Berkey seated at a desk and holding a telephone handset to her left ear. Images 44d and 1d are nearly identical to image 43d.Made/Created
