Description

Swearing-In Ceremony, 1976. These nine black and white film negative strips were created for the Lacey Leader newspaper. These images were created using three separate rolls of film, so some of the physical numbers on the strips are repeated. For the purposes of this description, these strips will be grouped according to the film roll from which they originally came. Each of these groups will be assigned a lower-case letter to go along with the physical numbers on the strips (ex: 1a, 2a, 3a, 1b, 2b, 3b, etc.) to help differentiate between images. The images in group "a" show one woman and two men being sworn in, and what appears to be a reception for the swearing-in ceremony. These images appear to show the swearing-in ceremony for Lacey City Council members Bob Carino, Jo Gauthier and Tom Huntamer in 1976. Image 25a shows a man with a mustache wearing a Lacey Police Department uniform posing for a portrait-style photo. A pin which reads "LPD" is visible on his right-hand collar. Image 26a shows, from left to right: a taller man wearing glasses and a suit and tie looking down at a piece of paper in his hands, a man in glasses and a plaid suit jacket (Bob Carino), a woman in glasses and a sweater vest (Josephine "Jo" Gauthier), and a man in glasses wearing a suit jacket with a houndstooth pattern. Image 27a is very similar to the previous image, but here the tall man at left is looking at the other three people. Image 28a is very similar to the previous image, but here the three rightmost people are all raising their right hands. Image 29a is nearly identical to the previous image. Image 30a shows a very similar scene to the previous four images, but here the photographer has moved several feet to their right. Here Ms. Gauthier is nearly completely obscured behind Mr. Huntamer. Image 31a is very similar to images 28a and 29a, but here only the three rightmost people are visible in the image. All three are raising their right hands. The tall man at left's left hand holding a piece of paper is visible at the left-hand edge of the image. Image 32a is nearly identical to image 31a. Image 33a is also very similar to images 28a and 29a, but here the photographer has moved to his left by several feet. Here the back and right side of the tall man at left is visible, but his face is not. William Bush is visible in the background at right. Image 34a shows a woman in glasses shaking Jo Gauthier's hand. Image 35a shows the woman who was shaking Jo Gauthier's hand in the previous image speaking to William Bush in the foreground. A man is visible shaking Ms. Gauthier's hand and kissing her on the cheek. Image 36a shows the woman in glasses who was speaking to William Bush in the previous image looking at the camera. Only her head and shoulders are within the image frame. Image 37a shows a man (Bob Williams) wearing a fedora with a tobacco pipe in his mouth smiling. Image 38a shows a woman in glasses and a jacket (Karen Fraser) holding a small beverage cup and looking toward a man (Ed Winogrocki) at the right-hand edge of the image. Image 39a shows Ms. Fraser facing a woman in a striped sweater. Mr. Carino is at the right-hand side of the image. The images in group "b" appear to show the same event seen in the image in group "a." Image 36b shows what are presumably Bob Carino's upper legs and the bottom hem of his plaid jacket. Image 37b shows Mr. Carino holding a small beverage cup. Ed Winogrocki is visible in the background. The right side of Karen Fraser's face is visible at the left-hand edge of the image. Image 38b again shows Mr. Carino holding a beverage cup. Here a woman's shoulder in a striped sweater is visible at the bottom right corner of the image. Image 39b shows Bob Carino in the bottom-right quadrant of the image, and Jo Gauthier at center pointing an index finger upward. The left-hand side of Karen Fraser's face is visible at the left-hand edge of the image. Image 40b shows a blurry shot of Tom Huntamer's head and shoulders. Image 41b shows Ms. Fraser facing toward the right-hand side of the image frame. Image 42b is very similar to the previous image, but here Ms. Fraser has turned away from the camera slightly. The upper back portion of a person's head is visible at the bottom of the image. Image 43b shows a balding man (Dick Johnson) wearing glasses and a suit and tie. Mr. Johnson is wearing a polka-dotted shirt. Image 44b shows Tom Huntamer facing toward the left-hand edge of the image frame. Image 1b shows Karen Fraser looking toward the camera and smiling. Her head is tilted slightly to her left. Image 2b shows Bob Williams holding his tobacco pipe to his mouth with his right hand. His left hand is in his pants pocket. Image 3b shows Ed Winogrocki facing toward the left-hand side of the image frame. Image 4b shows Bob Carino at left and Bob Williams at right. Image 5b shows a seated Dick Johnson next to a standing Tom Huntamer. Bob Williams is partially visible at the right-hand edge of the image frame. Image 6b is similar to the previous image, but here the photographer has panned to their right slightly. A young woman is visible at the right-hand edge of the image facing toward the right-hand side of the image frame. Image 7b shows a woman in a vertically-striped sweater seated at a desk or table and turning to look toward the camera. Image 8b shows Karen Fraser with her body oriented toward the camera and turning her head toward her left. She appears to be holding a toothpick with a cube of cheese on it. Image 9b shows a man with a mustache wearing a tie and a dress shirt with flowers on it. The man is opening his mouth very wide. The images in group "c" show a man in a polo shirt posing for portrait photos, many people gathered in a meeting all, and approximately six people walking on a city sidewalk in the rain. Image 31c shows a man in a polo-style shirt posing for a portrait-style photo. He is wearing a pendant similar to a dog tag, and his shirt has two paw prints embroidered on the left side of the chest. Images 32c and 33c are nearly identical to image 31c. Image 34c shows many people gathered in a meeting hall. Most are seated, but there are also many peole standing in the background along the wall. All of the people are facing toward the right-hand side of the image frame. Image 35c is nearly identical to image 34c. Image 41c shows 4-6 people standing on a sidewalk immediately outside of a building. The people are all facing away from the camera, and a newspaper delivery box labeled "Morning Post-Intelligencer" is visible near the left-hand edge of the image frame. Image 42c is similar to the previous image, but here the photographer has moved toward their right by several feet. In this image, a sign reading "South Sound Realty" is visible on the side of the building. Image 43c shows several people standing on a street corner. William Bush is the only member of the group holding an umbrella, and he is pointing out into the road. Image 44c is similar to the previous image, but here a group of three men has joined the group shown in the previous image. A tall man wearing glasses and a long jacket is speaking and gesturing with his right hand. Printed in alternation along one long edge of all of these film negative strips is "KODAK SAFETY FILM" and "KODAK TRI X PAN FILM."
