Blood Donors, 1978. These six black and white contact print strips were created for the Lacey Leader newspaper. These images were created using two separate film rolls, so some of the physical numbers on the strips are duplicated. For the purposes of this description, these strips will be grouped according to the film roll from which they originally came. Each of these groups will be assigned a lower-case letter to go along with the physical numbers on the strips (ex: 1a, 2a, 3a, 1b, 2b, 3b, etc.) to help differentiate between images.
The images in group "a" show several different people donating blood in a mobile blood donation unit. Image 43a shows a bearded man in glasses tying or untying something from a woman's upper arm. The woman is laying down. Image 44a shows the same bearded man from the previous image touching a man in a plaid shirt's arm. This man in the plaid shirt is also laying down. Image 1a shows a bearded man without glasses wearing a plaid shirt with the sleeves rolled up to the mid-forearm holding a small vessel and a testing strip of some kind up in front of his face. A woman wearing glasses and a sweater is watching. Image 2a is similar to the previous image, but here the bearded man with glasses is visible at the left-hand side of the image. Image 3a is very similar to the previous image, but here the bearded man with glasses is visible bending down over a blood donor in the background. Image 4a shows the bearded man with glasses bending over a blood donor at the left-hand side of the image. A second blood donor is laying down on the right-hand side of the image, and visible in the background are a bald man in glasses and a seated woman drinking from a cup. Image 5a shows the bearded man in glasses leaning over a blood donor in striped pants. Two beverage cans are visible in the bottom right corner of the image. This image is oriented vertically. Image 6a is very similar to the previous image, but here the photographer has panned to the left slightly. Here only one of the two beverage cans is visible. Image 7a is very similar to the previous two images, but here the image is oriented horizontally. Image 8a shows the bearded man without glasses touching the right hand of a seated woman with shoulder-length hair. Image 9a is very similar to image 8a, but here the woman is resting her chin on her left hand. Image 10a shows the bearded man in glasses standing in the walkway down the center of the blood donation unit. His body is oriented toward the left-hand side of the image frame and he is looking toward the camera. Image 11a shows a woman in a shirt with a stripe around the torso laying on one of the blood donation tables. Image 12a shows a man in glasses with a goatee (Ken Balsley) laying on one of the blood donation tables. He is laughing. Image 15a is underexposed to the point that it is nearly blank. Image 16a shows a bearded man in glasses laying on the blood donation table. This image was captured at the level of the blood donation table. Image 17a is similar to the previous image, but here the image was captured from several feet above the level of the table. Image 18a shows two blood donation bags laying on a small table or work surface. Image 19a shows one blood donation bag.
The images in group "b" show shots of a can labeled "apathy fund." Image 40b shows the can laying on a desk or table. Image 41b is nearly identical to the previous image. Image 42b shows the reverse side of the can, which bears a large amount of small text explaining that the "apathy fund" is not a real charity. Images 43a through 44a and 1a through 2a are all nearly identical to image 42b. Images 3b and 4b show blurry shots of some documents or books laying on a desk.Made/Created
