Description

Thurston County Fair, 1976. These seven black and white contact print strips were created for the Lacey Leader newspaper. These images were created using two separate rolls of film, so some of the physical numbers on the strips are duplicated. For the purposes of this description, these strips will be grouped according to the film roll from which they originally came. Each of these groups will be assigned a lower-case letter to go along with the physical numbers on the strips (ex: 1a, 2a, 3a, 1b, 2b, 3b, etc.) to help differentiate between images. The images in group "a" show six different people individually milking a cow. Image 42a shows a person with long hair wearing overalls milking the cow. Image 43a shows a woman in glasses wearing a horizontally-striped top milking the cow. Image 44a shows a woman wearing a plaid shirt and high-waisted pants milking a cow. This image is oriented horizontally. Image 1a is very similar to the previous image, but here the image is oriented vertically. Image 2a is nearly identical to image 44a. Image 3a is nearly identical to image 1a. Image 4a shows a young woman with glasses wearing a plaid shirt and a sash milking a cow. The sash visibly reads "EEN," and probably in part reads "QUEEN." Image 5a is nearly identical to image 4a. Image 6a shows the young woman in the sash still kneeling down by the cow, but here turning to look toward the camera. She is smiling. Image 7a shows a man (Dick Pust) wearing a polo shirt with many identical buttons on it milking a cow. The buttons advertise the 1976 Lacey MAD Festival. Image 8a shows Mr. Pust still kneeling down, but here he is facing toward the camera and reaching outside of the image frame with his right hand. Image 9a is similar to image 7a, but here the photographer has zoomed in toward Mr. Pust. Image 10a shows a person with glasses wearing pants with a houndstooth pattern milking a cow. Image 11a is very similar to the previous image, but here the photographer has zoomed in on the person in the houndstooth pants. Image 12a is very similar to image 9a, but here the image is oriented horizontally. The images in group "b" show people on fair rides, person looking at riding lawnmowers, people posing with animals, people posing with buttons, people standing next to a Volkswagen Beetle, and a person milking a cow. Image 3b shows approximately eight people riding a small rollercoaster. One of the people in the front row of the rollercoaster car is wearing a t-shirt which reads "OREGON COAST." Image 4b shows a man with a mustache (Jon Powell) wearing a jacket with a John Deere logo on the breast. He is standing with his arms crossed amongst various lawnmowers. Image 5b shows a man in glasses with a goatee (Ken Balsley) riding the small rollercoaster seen in image 3b. Two children and two other adults are riding in the rollercoaster car with Mr. Balsley. Image 6b is very similar to the previous image, but here three adults children and no other adults are riding in the rollercoaster car with Ken Balsley. Image 30b shows a person in a flowered top posing for a photo with a bull. Image 31b shows a man in glasses, a woman with glasses and a child standing next to two sales displays for buttons. Image 32b shows a mother pig and approximately seven piglets in a pen. One person is leaning over into the pen to touch the piglets. Image 33b is similar to the previous image, but here no one is bending over into the pen. Image 34b shows three children standing next to a Volkswagen Beetle with many drawings and messages written on it. A scone vendor called "SCONE MAGIC" is visible on the left-hand side of the image. Image 35b is nearly identical to the previous image. Image 36b shows a person with shoulder-length hair wearing houndstooth-patterned pants crouching down and milking a cow. The milk pail is knocked on its side in this image. Image 37b is similar to the previous image, but here the milk pail is upright. Image 38b is similar to image 37b, but here the person is bending more at the back than they are crouching. Images 40b and 41b are nearly identical to image 39b. Ken Balsley believed that the child seated next to him in images 5b and 6b was his son, Brad Balsley. (Ken Balsey interview, 9/22/2017)
