Description

Shoot the Deschutes and Homann Park, 1976. These eight black and white film negative strips were created for the Lacey Leader newspaper. These images were created using three separate film rolls, so some of the physical numbers on the strips are repeated. For the purposes of this description, the strips will be grouped according to the film roll from which they originally came. Each of these groups will be assigned a lower-case letter to go along with the physical numbers on the strips (ex: 1a, 2a, 3a, 1b, 2b, 3b, etc.) to help differentiate between images. The images in group "a" show many children floating on innertubes in the Deschutes River, and several spectators watching the children float down the river. Image 19a shows approximately thirteen children floating on innertubes. The photographer is standing on a bridge above the floaters and looking down on them. Image 20a is nearly identical to image 19a. Image 21a is very similar to the previous two images, but here the group of children floating on the river has moved farther away from the camera. Image 22a is blank. Image 23a shows two children floating on the river underneath a large bridge. A man in a fishing cap and a small child are on the river bank and watching the children float down the river. Image 24a shows several cars and approximately twenty spectators on a bridge above the river. Several children are visible in the distance floating on the river. This image was captured from the river bank below the bridge. Images 25a through 28a are very similar to image 24a, but in each successive image the children floating on the river move closer to the camera. Image 29a shows eight children floating down the river. All of the children are facing away from the camera, and there is a large area of water occupying the lower half of the image. Image 30a is nearly identical to image 29a. Image 31a is similar to image 30a, but the photographer has panned upward slightly to make a bridge with several vehicles parked on it visible in the 1/3 of the image. Image 32a shows the finish line area of the Shoot the Deschutes race, including a banner marking the finish line. A handful of spectators are watching from the riverbank and two children on innertubes are approaching the finish line. Images 33a and 34a are very similar to image 32a, but they show the two floating children advancing progressively across the image frame from left to right. Image 36a shows the river looked down upon from immediately next to where a bridge connects to land. One child is visible in the river, and one car or small pickup truck is visible driving on the bridge toward the camera. Image 37a shows several children facing toward the left-hand side of the image frame. The child nearest to the camera is a little girl wearing a t-shirt which likely reads "BULLDOG" across the chest. Image 38a shows two girls and an older man wearing glasses and a fishing hat looking at something. Image 39a shows a girl holding up a skateboard. The images in group "b" show someone riding a unicycle, pond scenes, and a flock of geese in a grassy field. Image 35b shows a person riding a unicycle near a stop sign. Above the stop sign is a road sign which reads "ESKRIDGE BLVD." Image 36b shows a person riding a unicycle. They are oriented toward the right-hand side of the image frame. Image 37b shows the person riding the unicycle, but here the rider is oriented away from the camera. Two cars are visible on the road in the distance. Image 38b is similar to the previous image, but here the photographer appears to be standing on the road on which the unicyclist is riding. Image 40b shows a bridge over a river. The riverbanks are covered in trees and other foliage. Image 41b shows an adult with a small child sitting on their lap seated on a stump or small bench and looking out over a pond or river. Image 42b shows a flock of geese on a grassy field. Images 43b through 45b is nearly identical to image 42b. The images in group "c" show children floating on innertubes in the Deschutes River. In some of the images, large groups of spectators are visible watching the children float. Image 34c shows six children on innertubes facing away from the camera. Image 35c shows three children floating on innertubes in the river. All of these children are facing away from the camera. Image 36c shows six children floating in a river. The children are arranged in a rough diagonal line going from the bottom left corner and upper right corner of the image. Image 37c shows three children floating in the river. All of their faces are visible. Image 38c shows many spectators standing on a bridge over the river and on the adjacent riverbanks. Images 39c through 41c are nearly identical to image 38c. Image 42c is very similar to the previous two images, but here the photographer has panned toward the right, making more of the riverbank visible. Image 43c shows ten children floating on innertubes in the river. Printed in alternation along one long edge of each of these film negative strips is "KODAK SAFETY FILM" and "KODAK TRI X PAN FILM."
