Description

Mountain View Roof Project, 1976. These two black and white contact print strips were created for the Lacey Leader newspaper. These images show a tractor turned over on its side on a city street, and men working on the roof of Mountain View Elementary School in Lacey, Washington. Image 30 shows a tractor turned on its side on a city street. Approximately ten people standing together in two groups are visible in the left-hand half of the image. A 7-11 sign is visible near these two groups of people, and a Mobil sign is near the right-hand edge of the image. A portion of the back end of a pickup truck is visible at the left-hand edge of the image. Image 31 is very similar to the previous image, but the photographer has panned to the right slightly. Only one taillight and a small portion of the rear bumper of the pickup truck is visible in this image. Images 32 and 33 are nearly identical to image 31. Image 34 shows the then-new roof of Mountain View Elementary being built. A man with glasses wearing a cap is holding a 2x4 in the middle distance of the image. A power pole is visible in the left-hand 1/3 of the image. Image 35 shows two men, one wearing a cap and one wearing a helmet, leaning on one of the roof purlins. A power line extends from the top left corner of the image toward the center of the right-hand edge of the image. Image 36 shows the man in glasses wearing the cap pulling on a board with the claw side of a claw hammer. Immediately behind the man is a rooftop power pole with power lines extending to the left and right. Image 37 shows a shot of the school roof. Nearest to the camera is a flat section of roof, with a portion of a sloped section visible near the left-hand edge of the image. In the disctance is a large peaked roof with rounded rafter supports. The area under this roof is open to the outside. Image 38 is similar to the previous image, but here the photographer has panned toward the right. Here is visible a smaller building with five windows on the wall facing the camera and a large number of what appear to be domed skylights on the roof. Image 39 also shows the building with curved rafters in the distance, and nearer to the camera is a flat roof with many domed skylights it. At the center of the image in the foreground is a piece of wood sticking straight up with a diagonal support descending off of it toward the left. Ken Balsley stated that a number of Lacey schools were built with flat roofs, which were not ideal for the wet climate in Western Washington. These roofs were eventually modified or replaced to be better suited to this climate. (Ken Balsley interview, 9/27/2017)
