Description

Helping Hand Sign, 1976. These two black and white contact print strips were created for the Lacey Leader newspaper. These images show these men erecting a sign which reads "BLOCK PARENT PROTECTED AREA" in an area next to a road. Image 32 shows a man wearing a cap and jacket holding a shovel in his right hand and packing down the dirt around the sign with his foot. Image 33 shows the man looking toward the camera and smiling. His left foot is very close to the bottom of the sign post. Image 34 shows the man again looking toward the camera and smiling, but here the man has moved approximately four feet away from the sign toward the left-hand side of the image. Image 35 shows the man seen in the previous three images holding onto the sign with both hands while a second man packs down the earth around the sign post with his left foot. This second man has glasses and a beard. Image 36 is nearly identical to the previous image. Image 37 shows the man with glasses and a beard standing behind the sign and holding the shovel. The man without the beard and glasses is stooping and reaching toward the ground. Image 38 is similar to the previous image, but here the man without glasses and a beard is pointing toward the bottom of the sign post. In this image, the man with glasses and a beard's nametag is visible, and it reads "Ron." Ken Balsley stated that these signs were part of a program in which neighbors agreed to monitor the neighborhood children and provide a safe place for them in case of emergency.
