A sombrero, primarily made of straw, and coated with a smooth, white substance. The brim is made of brown felt. On the brown felt is a decorative green looped trim; a single one has popped free where the stitch failed. Below this green trim is a line of black and white trim in an alternating arrow pattern. Below this is a line of wavy red trim, then a thinner wavy green trim.
Below these trims are small designs; some seem structural, keeping the brim lifted, and consist of black threads and reddish sequins. There are scalloped designs in a yellow thread wrapped around a stiffer material.
The crown consists of several rounds of trim (top to bottom: thin wavy purple, thick white twisted rope, thin red twisted rope, thin wavy purple, red thread and dark sequin design, red thread over stiff material in crescent shape, white looped trim, small gold rope, green looped trim, red twisted rope, thick white twisted rope).
There are two tassels on each side. The base of the tassels are two-toned (green and white and red and white on the left, blue and red on the right). All of the loop pairs are the same white with red accents and green.
The underside of the sombrero mirrors the designs on the top exactly. There is a bright reddish orange rope terminating in red/orange/purple tassels. The lining is yellow with a cream top crown/label, which reads “GRAN FABRICA / DE SOMBREROS DE PALMA / LA INDUSTRIAL SAHUAYENSE / LICINIO CHAVEZ / BOLIVAR 160 / SAHUAYA, MICH / XXXXX”.
There is surface particulate on the sombrero, and beneath this, I believe it is stained. The surface treatment is cracking in places.
