Fragment, Musket Lock

Name/Title

Fragment, Musket Lock

Description

Artifact 04-57 is a musket lock fragment missing its spring. This is the front half of the side plate of a musket lock, flash pin intact. Found adjacent to where we think the Philadelphia rested on the lake bottom. Hagglund's collection includes half of a flint lock, and may be the exact match for this piece, confirming the location of the Philadelphia's resting place. It is possible that this piece was part of a musket that exploded from overuse, similar to the exploded cannon on the gunboat New York.

Use

This artifact is a portion of the iron plate that would have held a musket lock onto the stock.
