Description

Artifact W99-04.03 is a fragment of a musket lock with the gunflint still in place. It is associated with W99-04 and W99-04.02.

Use

Musket locks were essential in firing weapons. They held flint in place with a short hammer (also called a cock). When the trigger was pulled, the hammer released, causing the flint to strike a steel plate and generate a spark, which eventually would ignite the main charge in the barrel of the musket.
