Person Description

George Edward Buckhout was a prolific boat builder in Poughkeepsie, New York. He was born in Highland, NY to Jacob and Mary Buckhout. In his obituary in the June 16, 1948 Poughkeepsie New Yorker (which became the Poughkeepsie Journal), the paper referred to him as a "boat builder of note who had the distinction of constructing the fastest ice yacht in the world." George's father had started a boat shop in 1860 on the west side of the Hudson River, then relocated it to Poughkeepsie in 1871. George joined the business as a teenager and went on to run it after his father's death in 1892. During World War I, he became superintendent of construction at a Navy facility in Watervliet, NY, overseeing the construction of the F-5-L "flying boats."
