Shanower Original Owner: Benjamin Carter LCHS ID #: 29 Year Built: c. 1878 Architectural Style: Georgian/Federal Applicant Name: Stanley R. Shanower Description and Notes: The house was built by Benjamin Carpenter as the main house for his 50 acre farm ca. 1825. It contained 24 rooms. The house remained in the family until 1953 when it was purchased by a retired Cleveland Police Department officer. The house was razed in 1966 to make way for a shopping center (this property is just north of Great Lakes Mall). The house main portion of the house was a two story, 5 bay Georgian/Federal style house with wings that have Greek Revival details. The entry way was centralized with a small porch supported by Doric columns. All the windows on the front of the house were 6/6. A wing to the left side of the house was a story and a half. This also had an entrance into the house and a rear fireplace. On the right side of the house there is a single story porch with a flat roof. The house also had multiple other wings with none of them being taller than the main portion of the house. They were done in the Greek Revival style. The left side had another portion that extended from it's rear. And the right side had another five bays that ran along the width of the porch.
