Status: Record Updated Street Address: 311 South State St. City: Painesville Original Owner: John House Jr. LCHS ID #: 23 Year Built: 1844 Builder: John House Architectural Style: Greek Revival Architect: Jonathan Goldsmith Applicant Name: Mr. and Mrs. Jack Barnes Description and Notes: The house was built in 1844 by Jonathan Goldsmith who is have to built the home for himself and his family. An early owner of the house was Dr. John House, famous for a boys industrial school which he founded in Salonica, Greece. The two and half story cross gable house is Greek Revival in style. This is a more vernacular take on the style with the cross gable. The house has four bays. Two bays of a front entrance with side lights and a grouping of three one over one story windows may up the main bay of the house. The second story windows are two over one. Doric pilasters are on the corners of the house which go up until the cornice. The half story has a pediment with a single square window in it. The other two bays are a recessed wing of the house with one over one windows on each story and a wide chimney. The house also has dormers. There also appears to have been an addition of a single story porch that stretches the length of the facade. It is supported by thin Doric columns and has a pediment over the entry way. The porch appears to be more Queen Anne in style than Greek Revival.
