Description

Civil War sewing kit, or "Housewife," made for soldiers to take with them so they could sew on butttons and make other repairs to uniforms while in the field. This one probably was made by a wife for her husband. It is monogrammed "PS" or "PL". Probably made from scraps of maker's clothing: outside is dark, teal plaid bound in tan; inside has calico print and tiny check. More generic kits were made by The Soldiers' Aid Society.
