Description

Sketch of The Avenue House - Mentor, Ohio (C. H. Mallory Proprietor) 1876 - The Avenue House in Mentor occupied the present (1960) site of Fenton's Market on Mentor Avenue. (newspaper article by Bobbie Hitchcock reads as follows: In 1857, one P. Stuart operated a tavern on the site of William G. Demeter's Mentor Floral Gardens, 9340 Mentor Avenue. Here, in 1873, J. B. Barnes ran a hotel called the Avenue House. Barnes' horse and rig carried people from the Avenue House and from The Depot House near the Mentor railroad station, to the Lakeview House on Little Mountain. Bulldozers graded the site for the Mentor Outdoor Movie Theater in 1947, dozing several mounds of the Late Archaic and Early Woodland Indians. Nobody knows the shape taken by these mounds because the mounds had been obliterated by plows.
