Description

Cleveland, Painesville and Ashtabula Railroad Bridge. (verbiage from photo: First stone bridge of the Cleveland, Painesville and Ashtabula Railroad over Grand River at Painesville, Ohio. General J. S. Casement and his brother D. T. Casement had the contract for the building of this bridge. U. S. Route 20 now crosses Grand River at the same place as the covered bridge in the foreground. This railroad bridge was erected in the 1850's to replace a wooden trestle which caught fire and burned. It was replaced in 1908 by the present railroad bridge. The Cleveland, Painesville and Ashtabula railroad was chartered in 1848 and constructed a railroad in 1852 from Cleveland, Ohio to the Ohio - Pennsylvania state line. In 1854 they purchased the Franklin Canal, which railroad ran from Erie, Pa. to the Pennsylvania-Ohio line. In March 1869 the C. P. & A. consolidated with the Erie and Northeast Railroad and the Buffalo and State Line Railroad to form the Lake Shore Railroad. In May 1869 the Lake Shore Railroad consolidated with the Michigan Southern and Northern Indiana Railroad to form the Lake Shore & Michigan Southern. In December, 1914, the L. S. & M. S. passed out of existence and the New York Central Railroad emerged as one line from New York to Chicago. The original of this picture is owned by Mrs. Harold Furlong, a granddaughter of General J.
