Description

Old Stone Mansion located on Fresno Road, Fresno, Ohio Built in the Summer of 1849 by George Hallacy of Willis Creek from stone queried from the farm originally owned by Thomas Powell. The entire Powell famil, which were often threatened for helping, were sympathizers with the colored race and helped them to obtain their freedom. Three brothers lived in a zig zag line through this part of the county and were a part of the Underground Railway system. This house is one of the oldest in the system. Boys and girls helped to convey wagon loads of slaves on their way to freedom. The slaves came at night and in the early morning, were given their breakfast and hidden during the day. They were concealed in the bottoms of wagons.
