Written on the back: Workers, known as "Bill Hervey's Gang" on the ore docks at the P. & L. E. Docks - Fairport Harbor, Ohio. Printed from a negative in the collection of John M. Eller in 1963 by Elroy Sanford of Willoughby.
Original Finish spelling is Hirvi. Also known as Hervey. Per Lee Silvi:
Lynn:
Thank you for the spelling verification. It's likely more than one of my ancestors will be in the photo, as 3 or 4 of them worked the docks in the early 1900s.
My Hirvi (Hervey) and Silvi ancestors came here from western Finland in the 1870s and 1880s and many of them worked the docks until "the Diamond" hired some of them in the 1900s.
I'll try find more information in time, but the original photo was probably taken earlier in the 1900s - before "self unloaders" came to being. I may have dates in my genealogy research.
Most of the reason for these dock "gangs" was to manually unload cargo from the ships when they were in port.
