Scope and Content

The old chair factory located in Kirtland on the east branch of the Chagrin River was founded by Chester Hart and Grandison Newell, from Winsted, CT. in 1816. Mr. Newell built a dam across the river in the 1820's and built a suitable building. Isaac Wright who arrived in 1831 says they were making the common kitchen chair and the more pretentious flag bottom seat, also rocking chairs, settees and baby cribs. Mr. Newell sold the business to Milo Harris and David Abbott who increased the output and employed more than a dozen people. John R. Coe, a school teacher, bought it in 1840 wo changed what was made there. Physical Characteristics: Paper
