1996-0001-0013MDescription
6 Cent stamp, War Department, faded red, cancelled; from Capt. Albee's collection.
Stamp is unique because it was printed for and limited to governmental agency use. These stamps are called "officials" and were not available for purchase at a post office. Special official stamps were put into circulation after July 1, 1873, when government mail could not no longer be sent free. Each department had its own type of stamp, with its name inscribed instead of "US Postage". The "officials" were discontinued in 1884.
