S. #1. A.E.F. Unlike most of the Air Service organizaticms, the 1102nd Aero Replacement Squadron found its origin in the A.E.F. Up te this time, casuals arriving at this post from hospitals etc ., were, as a rule, attached to the Headquarters ~drein, until such time as was found expedient to forward them. to the ir respective units, but as the numbers were gradually increasing and large drafts of unassigned men were expected overseas, it was found necessary to institute an organization whose sole object would be the handling of these men. Therefore, the 1102nd Aero Replacement Squad.rem came into ·be ing on Mey 12th, 1918. Its first quarters were at Coiffe BB.rracks, under the connnand of no less a · personage than Captain Rebert E. Bell, A.S.M.A., who was foremerly commanding Officer of Canclaux Barracks, and started with a presonnel of · ab•~t forty men, about six of Whom were actually transferred to the 1102nd before the organizatiQn was general known, The others were casuals quartered at Canclawr; Barracks, who were attached to the n&w organization for return to their units. It was foreseen that, inasmuch as the 1102d was to handle large replacement drafts and all casuals arriving at this Post, a system must be inaugwiated whereby large drafts of men could be efficiently received and despatched in eht shortest possible time. This was soon accomplished by the inauguration of a card system, whereby a record of every rna.n passing ti:orough the organization is kept Qn file. C?.ptain Bell, was relieved as Eommanding Officer, on Ma:{ 16, 1918 , · and Captain c. J. Ryan, L . S .M.A., assumed cdmmand and was relieved Mey 23rd, 1918. Major J.W. Peyton, A.s. i..:.A., was then =ounced as Commanding Officer, and was relieved l!ay 31st, 1918, The\\followed Captain Edward K. Jones, cavalry, who was relieved a dsy after his assignment. Captain Boyd F. Driggs, A.S . 1;1.A., was next & announced on June 5 th, 1918, and remained i n cor.:imand until July 11 t h:jl 1918 v1hen he was succeaded by 1st Lieut. Thomas E. Brady, A.S . The messing -rac il it iee of the Squadron are excellent, under the dire ct ion of a long experienced Mees Sergeant, anywhere from one hundred to e :ight hundred men can be messed syst-emat-:ically from three kitchens.
