1945.09.07 Japanese Lily Airplane at Nanjing Airbase
Description
9-7-45
Japanese "Lily" parked in front of bomb shattered hangar at Nanking. This Japanese twin-engined plane called "Lily" by American pilots was one of few serviceable planes found at the Nanking airfield when Chinese forces arrive there. Although hangars had been wrecked by direct bomb hits and had not been repaired, the airfield was in good condition. The field was immediately put into service by the U.S. Transport Command for bringing in thousands of fully equipped troops of American trained Chinese new Sixth Arrmy, which occupied Nanking two days before the formal Japanese surrender was signed there on September 9th.
