Description

Jan 7th 1959 letter from LAG to Betty and family recounting leaving Bengazi Libya and traveling to start a new assignment working with the ICA / Village Aid in Dacca, East Pakistan (Bangladesh), The content reads; Dacca, East Pakistan 7 Jan 1959 Dear Betty & family. We is here. Arrived the evening of 2 Jan. from Calcutta – was met at the airport by the Provincial Chief and others – also my Pakistan counterpart. Whisked through customs etc. We expected to go to a hotel but instead we were taken to a house (temporary quarters so they say). We shall see – But any how complete with servants – a cook – a bearer – a gardener, part time – a sweeper, part time. We will eliminate some. We pay the salaries. The cook is good (at least so far and on a kerosene stove). Glad is a lady of leisure at present – she had to resign her position. It will probably bore her after a bit – but she can join some activities here – something she could not do in Libya. We had quite a time on the trip. Left Benghazi on the 15 Dec., went to Tripoli – left there the 18th for Beirut via Rome -a couple of days there and then to Karachi – the red carpet treatment. The holidays helped – 3 places Xmas eve – 2 on Xmas day including a dinner with Far East friends – New Years Eve in Calcutta - an odd but rather interesting evening – Left Calcutta the second – Only an hours ride on the DC3 – They seem so small these day – Write- Love Dad & Gladys
