Description

A newsy letter from Gladys to Betty and Gus in Corpus Christi TX' The letter reads: Dacca, 5 May 1960 Dear Bety and Gus: So glad to get your two letters of March 8 and April 13, although it doesn’t look like it by the time lapse in answering. So you are now a working gal-business sounds good-wish I could get fifty cents per letter-more power to you. Why don’t you open an office at home on the side and thus save yourself a trip to the office. That’s the way I wangled (sp) the extra work I did for the Survey Team, charged them so much an hour and did the work when I had time and felt like it. Re the deoderent (sp) your Dad was referring to the fact that it was Merle Norman, the brand name or the company you didn’t like! It may have been put on the top shelf in the closet in the hall-however no loss. Hope your garden is coming along fine after all your work-Larry dug up my round garden and transplanted all the flowers when they were in bloom-you know what happened-only ones that survived were the asters-however the weather has been too hot (up to 108) to grow anything these past two weeks-we are on our second crop of corn but the ears don’t look as though they will be too big-the green pepper plants still survive and we still live in hopes that something will happen when the monsoons hit next month-the mall (gardener) keeps says (sp) when it rains everything will be OK. I seem to have gotten involved in the bridge round-Virginia Caprio is leaving and there have been about four bridge luncheons for her and I am lucky enough to be included-we haven’t got into the bridge at night with couples as we are involved with other entertainment because the new Provincial Director is from Libya and we knew both he and his wife before-gave our first official do with the rest of the V-AID Division last Saturday night-had five top Pakistani officials, but only one wife turned up, had 22 for buffet and some extras in for drinks-with five cooks the food was very good-tomorrow night we are giving a party for the Caprios-18 for buffet-following week buffet for friends for about 20-thank goodness for Marcus. I attended a typical Pakistan luncheon yesterday-sat on the floor and ate with our hands-no knives or forks—Joe Fazal gave it for Virginia and said she had the knives and forks handy but thought it would be fun to do it typical Pakistan style-the food was delicious but a little hard to negotiate the rice which you had to sort of manipulate so it stuck together and formed a ball and then put it in your mouth. Even ate a pan leaf rolled like a cone into which they had ground betel nut and other spices, topped with silver tinfoil, (sp) which they also eat-very fine and no taste. Got quite a kick out of your description of your description of the “garden move”-must have been that, that got your Dad started around here-wish we had some of that manure you didn’t need. We did a little adding to our stock the first of March, just missed by two days getting it at the lower point, but it is gradually coming back now-guess we are the conservative type and also we aren’t close enough to do any real trading. Our planting season here is in October right after the monsoons-we got a good crop of tomatoes and had one batch of corn which was delicious, but your Dad says next season it will be better as he is really going to go to town on fertilizers-ahem, that I will wait to see. He can not (sp) make his comments-- Re-Wall Street Journal-The APO mail is too slow and International Mail too expensive-but-thanks any way-The consulate is supposed to get that paper-but by the time it hits the library-it is old-The standby is the New York Times International Air Mail issues from Amsterdam. Sometime-when lucky ‘tis only a week old. Re Larry & check -you might query him-so far it has not been cashed-‘tis only for ten-but there is no need for floating about-We did leave a package for him-yes! No! Love Larry
