Break in the fighting - hand drawing and poemSubject
Kampfpause.

A lull in the fighting.
A flat land around me with only low hills, the roads and villages lined with birch trees, a windmill sometimes with its sails still, and everything around so strangely still and dreamy.
In the undulating cornfield, a small chapel, and soft chords are drawn from the trees by the wind; strange shadows flit through the evening light, and from the nearby stream rises so lukewarm, so gentle.
Not in churches, but under trees I can pray, in the fairytale darkness of humming, whispering forests, and see, reverently trembling, that all the others also enter the temple of blossoming fields.
Thus I contemplate everything and remain sitting quietly—then from distant mountains rolls a thunderous roar from several cannons—How foolishly one can sometimes dream!
