The Process: The striking contrast between the dark obsidian body and the lighter, honey-gold nodes is a result of meticulous fire-seasoning. By applying heat directly to the nodes while leaving the internodes to carbonize, the smith ensures that the points of maximum structural stress (the nodes) remain flexible, while the body of the shaft becomes glass-hard.
The High-Status Pommel: The head is encased in a heavy engraved brass cap. The fluted, flared design of the pommel acts as a mechanical counterweight, pulling the point of balance toward the lead hand. This allows the 5-foot lever to be manipulated with the speed of a shorter stick while retaining the reach of a staff.
