I am presenting my Udaipur Damascus Knife Blanc, a specialized artifact that records the "Structural Truth" of my metallurgical collection. I acquired this from the master forges of Udaipur, Rajasthan, specifically as an un-scaled Blanc to document the raw profile and material integrity of the steel before the application of any organic handle materials. To me, this piece represents a pinnacle of Pattern-Welded Engineering; it is a tool that records the complex Thermomechanical History of the forge in its most honest state.
My Design & Engineering Observations
My Choice of Material (Pattern-Welded Damascus Steel):
What I have here is a single-piece mono-construction featuring a high-contrast Raindrop or Bird’s Eye Damascus pattern.
My Technical Logic: By forge-welding multiple layers of high-carbon and low-carbon steel, the Udaipur smiths have achieved a state of Metallurgical Elasticity. The visible "Etched Record" across the entire surface documents the folding and hammering process.
The Edge: I notice a primary bevel has been established, revealing a bright, polished core. This provides me with "Edge Certainty" while maintaining the decorative administrative finish on the flats.
My Choice of Architecture (The Integrated Skeleton Hilt):
Because this is a Blanc, the handle remains a continuation of the blade steel. It features an aggressive "Upswept Flare" at the pommel.
My Mechanical Logic: This flare acts as my Anatomical Stop. Even without handle scales, the radical geometry of the steel provides a physical stop for the heel of my palm, ensuring Retention Certainty during high-pressure slicing cycles.
The Finger Choyl: I have a deep, ground choyl at the transition between the handle and the edge. This allows me to "choke up" on the blanc for maximum Mechanical Leverage.
