I am presenting two Modified Butter Knives, artifacts that record the very first steps of my metallurgical journey in 1991. To me, these pieces represent the genesis of my "Resourceful Modification" philosophy; they document the moment I transitioned from a collector of objects to a re-engineer of steel. I personally ground and sharpened these in my early teens, prioritizing Edge Utility over their original domestic purpose. I value these as primary biographical records, specifically indexing my move into Hand-Honed Tool Craft.
My Design & Engineering Observations
My Choice of Steel (Unit 156 - Sheffield Stainless):
I am looking at a blade forged in Sheffield, England, a world-renowned hub for high-quality cutlery.
My Technical Logic: Sheffield stainless is prized for its Corrosion Certainty and its ability to take a high-status administrative polish. I personally ground the tip into a more aggressive profile, transforming a rounded table tool into a functional point for detailed piercing tasks.
My Choice of Steel (Unit 157 - 1980s US Import):
This blade was acquired from the United States in the 1980s, predating the start of my formal collection.
My Technical Logic: I notice a deeper patina on this blade compared to the Sheffield unit, suggesting a different carbon-to-chromium ratio. I ground this into a symmetrical Spear-Point silhouette, which aligns the tip with the longitudinal axis of the hilt for better Force Distribution.
My Hilt & Personal Modification Records:
Unit 156 (Fiber Wrap): I have personally wrapped this handle in a dense, high-friction Twine or Jute. This provides me with superior Tactical Indexing compared to the original smooth hilt. It documents my early interest in improving "Grip Certainty" through hand-applied materials.
Unit 157 (Tapered Metal): This hilt retains its original elegant, fluted metal architecture. The weight of the solid metal hilt shifts the Center of Gravity back toward my hand, providing me with better "liveliness" and tip control.Made/Created
