Ice cutting on Gibbs Lake. In the early part of the 20th century, the pioneers cut blocks of ice from Gibbs Lake in the Vance (Cispus) area, across Cowlitz from Randle. They packed the ice in sawdust and stored it in an ice house near the present Dream Theater in Randle, WA. With the coming of electricity and refrigeration, the art of ice cutting and storage passed into history. The house and barn in the photo belonged to John Davis, ca. 1920.
