P5772Description
Photo of the Chehalis Brick and Tile Co. buildings 1907. Shows the round kiln in the center and an oblong kiln on the left. Originally the kilns were built on the ground with no roof and made out of green bricks that had been taken out of molds after air drying just enough to allow them to be handled and formed into the side walls of the kiln. After the fire was lit, they were dried and then taken off and sold,as was necessary. As each kiln was sold,a new one had to be built which involved much labor. Later a roof was added to keep the heat in. Eventually a permanent kiln was built and the bricks placed inside to dry. Have negative.Collection
